Post subject:  Upper ball-joint issues w/ lift install

Hello all,
I decided to try and install my Rustys 2.5" spring/strut lift on my 2005 CRD today. All went well so far.. dissasembly was cake... now I'm trying to re-assemble them. I'm having a problem with the upper a-arm's ball-joint. I keep turning on the nut but it won't tighten. It seems the ball joint insides are spinning with my turns. Did I screw up? Will I need a whole new upper a-arm? help! CRD is in garage in bits n' pieces heh..

Just need to put a 10mm socket on the end of the bolt to hold it in place and use an open-end wrench to get it snugged down, then you can torque it.

I always put a bar over top of the upper control arm into the spring and pry down and tighten up the nut! JUst has to have some pressure on it.

Yea, thats normal. Its a ball in a socket and it will spin.

You need to take a wrench like corwyyn said and put it on the bottom of the balljoint. Take an adjustable wrench and tighten the nut while keeping the balljoint from spinning with the 10mm wrench.

Probably would'nt hurt to have an impact, more times than not the speed of the impact will outrun the balljoint.

Thanks all! I was sitting there and figured it out.. used a crescent wrench for the top, and a 10mm for the bottom bit. Very annoying... and embarassing.

Hey Nix,
Don't be embarrassed if we it was that easy their would be no need for L.O.S.T. and all of us would be on line looking at porn or online J.C. Whitney catalogs. As a no clue shade tree mechanic I've learned and shared more about my Libby in the last 3 weeks with L.O.S.T. then in the last year with my JEEP.

LEAD :) FOLLOW  or GET OUT OF MY WAY   8) :-)r :-)r :-)r

Yeah, that's what we used.

I didn't even think about using my impact wrench on that. I did, however, use my impact wrench on the lower clevis attachment point. That thing was on so flippin' tight.

And for those who don't have access to compressed air,the "Souix"(pronounced Sue)company makes a real nice electric one.

Hey what happened to good old hand tools and muscles
OK I admit my Southeastern Ohio garage has air tools but my Northwestern garage...... I have to do it the OLD way and no remarks from Ron on my age
I wonder can you run one of those Souix off of a converter? Now that would be the way to go out on the trail!

I really can't say much about your age cause I'm just 3 or 4 years behind you....but we are getting old. :)
Not sure of the amp draw on those impacts, but I'd guess you could get a big enough converter to run one.And now that I think about it.....If you do a search on "Cordless Impact Wrenches"you would probably find one that runs on say 18 volt battery packs. Now that could be a very handy tool out on the trail.
