So i got my CB installed yesterday, I wired it in to the cig lighter. Antenna is sitting on the roof of the jeep. I got little wil magnetic 38 inch antenna. After I got it hooked up I flipped through the channels and I heard some people talking but I could barely understand what they are saying. Does anybody ever get on CBs anymore? |

On the CB most all road trips which is every couple of weeks, of course have several friends who are still out there trucking for a living so sort of stay up that way also, what didnt you understand? Depends on what part of the country you are in and also if you have some of the newby drivers who are trying to sound like they are big time truckers Tom |

Most of the CB traffic is out on the highways, I live about a mile from the highway and only get intermittent traffic from my driveway. Take a road trip and see if you have better luck. Another factor that could affect your reception is where the antenna is positioned on your vehicle. If its centered, your reception should be omnidirectional, if its near the rear of the vehicle, you will enlarge the reception lobe toward the front of the jeep and decrease it toward the rear. |

I hooked up an old plug in type CB a few years ago in my old YJ, and was surprised to hear...almost nothing. I guess CB's are not a popular as they once were with the general 4WD crowd. I have not tried one since. At one time everyone I knew had a CB in their vehicle, now I don't know anyone except a friend that travels up from Florida using a big dooley Dodge w/a fifth-wheel toy hauler. |

mate they are not running UHF radios there for the best prices on radio's i would go to prestige in WA and get them to freight it over, i bought an RFI 6db antenna and they were 50 bucks cheaper than going local and for mounting get a GME or uniden remote face unit and stick it under the radio in that useless little cavity beside the ciggie lighter

ATM I'm using a hand held uniden but have no place to mout it while trying to drive, any ideas. What's the go with not using UHF radios? Every time I turn my hand held on there are always peolple blabbing away. |

So is there any other radio that everybody is using more nowadays? Whats that UHF that you guys are talking about? UHF stands for Ultra High Frequency, it's a band width that (I think) was used for transmitting TV reception. It's the frequency that we use for our radio's. Other than that I don't know much about it, perhaps Fouros does. |

In the U.S. the UHF band is licensed. You can use the 1/2 and 1 watt UHF talkabout handhelds license free, but units with power high enough to be useful require a $75 license from the FCC every 5 years. Sad fact is that even the licensed 2 watt units don't come close to matching the range of the standard 4 watt CB, and no license required. Besides if you need help on the road, the truckers don't carry talkabouts and the State Patrol is probably got a CB in the car monitoring Channel 9. |

UHF is not licenced here in aus. standard in car unit is 5 watts , if your naughty you can upgrade quite a few to 25 watts ( gives you about 60-70 mile range i mounted the antenna on my Nudge bar
ran the cable through the grille behind the battery and through the fire wall to the radio used this as a guide ( thanks Corwyn ) http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Jeep_Liberty/Electrical/Firewall_Penetration oh and i used one of these to tap into my fuse box
you can get them from here http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=071-580 |
