My jeep was on an incline in 4-low when I decided that I wasn't going to make it up. When I went to put her in reverse I got an awful twisting cracking type of sound. It actually did this twice that day! Nothing seems to be wrong but anyone else ever get this? It really scared the crap out of me when I heard it! |

Mine makes some bad noises in that situation as well. I just assume that the driveline has quite a bit of tension and by switching to reverse it gets released. |

I just put the clutch in when I want to roll backwards |

I've always been taught that if you get stuck on a hill, NOT to put it in reverse, but to put it in neutral to get back down the hill backwards. Putting it in reverse effectively pushes the vehicle down the hill, and could cause the vehicle to turn sideways and roll a lot easier than if it was in neutral. |

^, thats what i do, sometimes if i dont want the front wheels to slide, ill pull on the e-brake alittle too, so it puts brakes on the rear more than the front. |

Back to the sound issue...mine makes it coming out of drive, not necessarily going into reverse. So whether or not I was using nuetral or reverse makes no difference. If I pop it out of drive on a steep incline it will make a noise. |

Ok, I have put my video on my computer now and you can hear the sound quite clearly. If I knew how to link to a video I would do so...may have to recruit a computer buddy. Anyway, and this may be a long explanation. I actually had another issue when I was out wheeling. Believe it or not one of my rear springs fell out! I am not kidding, I even have it on tape. I am running up a hill and I am going through some ruts...my KJ is fully flexed at the drs. rear and clear as day you can see the spring just plop out on the ground! Sooooooo, when looking at my video I think the sound I hear was my spring either snapping into or out of place? Thats what I think anyway? When I put it back in tonight I checked and my shock has way too much travel and when fully flexed my spring is able to just plop out! |

Liberty Titan, I just watched you video's, and was suprised to hear that sound. I had that same "clattering" sound on mine. I was begining to climb out of a rocky wash and I began loseing rear traction. This stopped my forward motion. At that point, I put the tranny in reverse to setup a different line and was suprised / alarmed by that sound. I thought something bad just happened to my Lib. I have an 02 Limited, 4X4, Auto 45REF, Selec-Trac, Trac-Lok, and ABS Brakes. It's completely stock. Something else, way before this happened, I was starting to hear an odd faint sound coming from the rear of the Liberty. At first, it only made this sound when I was backing and turning at the same time. I would describe it as a "pressure stressed groaning sound" One month before my warranty was to end, I went to the dealership to get an oil change, and I mentioned the "groaning sound" to the service manager. When I picked it up, they told me they didn't hear any sound or find anything wrong. But, he did suggest that I get the rear differential serviced. At that time, my milage was a little over 32K. Well, the sound start to get louder, and would also sound when going forward while turning. So, at 35K I took it in for another oil change, and mention the sound to a new service manager. This time they did here the sound and said that the rear diff needed servicing, and that I might as well get the front one service too. He said the noise had something to do with low fluid levels and a clutch in the limited slip differential. I asked him how long it would take and how much it would cost. He said about 1 1/2 hours, and $350. I asked If it was serious. He said it wasn't that serious, but I should get it done soon. I set up an appointment for the next week. I think that the "clattering", and "groaning" sound are one in the same. Did you get yours resolved? The appointment is still a couple days away. I think that $350 is way to much for 1.5 hrs work. I found a tech article on this forum describing the steps to take for a non-mechanic to complete the job. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=180 I think its worth a try. curtis |

The sound you here in the videos that I posted is my tires rubbing. The sound I was concerned with I never posted the video. It was more of a short cracking sound. I have pretty much atributed it to tension being released out of my drive-train. I had my Jeep fully serviced at the shop...diff, axle, transfer and what not...a while back. You can do it yourself...its easy enough...but when its winter in Saskatchewan you don't want to be working in your driveway(much too cold). You should try it yourself cause 350$ seems quite steep to me? Let us know how it goes. |

If you pay $350 for that you might as well call the cops because you're getting robbed. |

I called my dealer (5*) and asked what quantites of fluids it would take and the costs. He quoted: Front (2qts) Rear (3qts) of Syn Gear Lub 75w-140 @ $31.74 qt. (1) bottle of Friction Control Additive @ $11.05 (1) RTV tube @ $4.95 Total $174.50 Wow, I that gear lube is expensive... I called another dealer (?*). They quoted: Gear Lube (5qts.) @ $19.25 qt. Additive $same RTV $same Total $112.25 That was better so, I went down to buy the stuff. I happend to see the service manager and I asked him for a quote for a front / rear differenital service. He quoted $145 per axle, fluids included. I said Ok do the rear only. So I chicken out on doing it myself. curtis |

When I put it back in tonight I checked and my shock has way too much travel and when fully flexed my spring is able to just plop out! That happens with alot of KJ's when super flexed. You can make some bump stops to hold them in or buy some from AllJ http://www.boulderbars.com/kjproducts.htm The springs just don't expand as much as the shocks. |
