Does anybody know if its possible to program a VIN into a pcm w/o changing the rest of the programming?

yup, if you pull a pcm from another kj, even if its the same year, part number, etc. it will not work. From what i understand, it will start for a moment and cut off. Before i sent my pcm to B&G for a flash, i needed to get the vin written to it; both B&G and the dealership told me the same thing.

If the VIN doesn't match the PCM, it will run for a couple seconds, and shutdown. I know that for a fact, because when I bought my spare PCM, they shipped it without writing the VIN to it. I sent it to B&G, and they programmed it. It wouldn't run because of the VIN not matching and was throwing codes about it. I had to ship it back to the people I bought it from, and they had to send it to a guy in California to get the VIN changed without reprogramming it. Turns out it's just like upgrading the firmware on a piece of computer hardware. Not bad as long as it's the standard flash, and nothing goes wrong. If something goes wrong, you may have a paper weight. That's why so few people can reprogram them at all, and instead use piggyback chips to lie to the current computer.

another possibility. I'm concerned that between the cost and the trouble, i'll get very little for the PCM if i decide to return my KJ to stock to sell it. That all being said, after a couple of months cleaning up, the fastman is up and running again and my throttle body is on its way.....
