Post subject:  SeaFoam, just need a confirmation...

I got SeaFoam today during lunch. I bought 2 cans. 1/2 of 1 got dumped into the gas tank. 1/2 is going to get dumped into the crankcase (if I can get the cap off. not sure why, but it won't budge).

I am going to use part of the other can through the vacuum line, so I want to just type what I think I need to do and have some people confirm it so I don't hydrolock my engine...

1) pour about 8 oz. into an open container
2) remove the larger vacuum hose going from the TB into the Brake Cyl.
3) Start the car
4) lower the vacuum line into the container with the SeaFoam until it's just starting to SLOWLY slurp the seafoam in. If the engine starts to chug and stall, pull the vacuum line out of the seafoam allowing it to get more air.

This is where I get a little confused...

5A) When it's about 1/2 - 2/3 sucked in, push the vacuum hose fully into the remaining seafoam allowing the engine to suck the remainder in, and stall out.

OR

5B) When it's about 1/2 - 2/3 sucked in, push the vacuum hose lower into the remaining seafoam allowing the engine to suck more in and slowly increase the amount it's sucking until it slowly stalls.

6) wait 15-45 minutes, start the engine and enjoy the SpyHunter-esque smoke screen.

That sound OK? any other tips?

I do the 5B method. Im not sure what is "correct" but it just didnt seem right to suck that much in all at once :?

5B for me, shut off car and restart after 15 or 20 minutes.

So basically just Do step 4 until it's all gone and skip step 5 completely?

5A and 5B seem the same to me, you just worded it different. After you have around 1/2 a can sucked in, stall it out by sucking in to much. Wait 15-20min then restart.

Take some pictures!!!

I want to see the process and definitely the aftermath!

ok, heres my stupid question for the day:

i have seen a lot of posts about this. but i seriously have no idea what seafoam is or what it does. by reading between the lines, i think ive figured out that its just some sort of substance that you use to seriously clean out the inside of an engine. what are the advantages to doing this and what are the risks?

thanks for tolerating me!

Jeepster, The main difference in my mind (and since I wrote it, my mind is the correct one to have a difference in) is that A you plunge the hose in sucking all that's left in one big gulp. B, you slowly allow more to be taken in until is just barely stalls itself.

Slow vs. Fast stall

Jerbacher, from what I've gathered, the only real danger is sucking in too much at once and hydrolocking your engine. Think of drowning in a tablespoon of soup. Not as much as dumping the KJ in a pond, but the same effect.
The benefit is that you get rid of all the grease, gunk, and dirt built up in your intake, and upper block, thus recovering power and performance.

It disolves any and all carbon buildup in the intake track (from the suction point forward of course.) It is really nice to use on cars with severe duty cycles or every 100K miles or so. I did my Liberty back around the 60K mile mark this summer and didn't get too much of a smoke show from carbon build up but at least the runners are clean.

Gris, I like the slow sucking method so that I don't lock up the motor. Also I feel that sucking the fluid slowly allows more of it to cycle around the upper portion of the intake and do a better job of cleaning. Rather than a Large blob of the stuff sitting in the runner with the intake valve closed or partly opened (and dripping down onto the piston and rings)

I just hit 90k miles. Thing's never been cleaned since I got it at 30k. Should be a decent show.

record the show. :D

yeah, gonna. I'll snap some pics showing what I'm doing and setup the Camcorder on a tripod to record the start-up afterwords.

Sometimes you can foul a sparkplug with the seafoam cleaning...I have read where some people change the spark plugs afterwards...I just romp on mine a bit and they always smooth right out 8)

Dont use sea-foam, chrysler combustion cleaner does a much better job. It foams to get more of the carbon out of tough spots like back sides of valves. Its not to expensive either. Most of the sea-foam just runs by the piston rings.

well...

That was anti-climatic.

I snapped some shots of the setup.

I sucked almost a full 10oz soup can in. It slowly stalled a few times, but started back up right away.

I waited about 45 minutes.

I setup the video camera.

I started the car.

I waited for white smoke that never came.

I gunned it up to 6k rpm for about 10 seconds and got a couple puffs of white smoke. left it at 6k rpm for 30 more seconds, but no more smoke.

When I let it down from 6k rpm, it idled at exactly 750, when before it was always closer to 1000, and I could not hear a peep from the engine.

Overall, the engine seems smoother and quieter, but no smoke!

Also check out my silly little tires i run when I'm not offroading to save gas. And notice my wife making fun of us.

I just did the triple-treatment on my KJ for the first time:
1/2 can into crankcase
1/2 can slowly sucked into main vacuum feed line (just downstream of TB) and 15 minute cold-soak before restarting
1 can into a gas tank, then topped off.

I didn't see any smoke at all (was getting dark by the time I restarted after the intake suck), but the engine was rough for the first couple minutes until I revved up a few times, then took it for a drive. Only thing I've noticed so far is it starts up INSTANTLY now instead of cranking for a couple seconds. The idle does seem SLIGHTLY lower, maybe 700 RPMs instead of 750. Will be changing the oil in the next 3-400 miles or so, that'll remove any gunk that the Seafoam liberates from my crankcase.

If you do not see alot of smoke then that should be a good thing. That means it wasn't really dirty.

Did you really hold it at 6k rpms for 30seconds? I do not believe all the combined times that my engine has been at 6k rpms added together is more than 30secs. Maybe Im really easy on it compared to other people though? :)

I guess not. Video is only about 20 secnds long and that was the whole 6k time.

It's got to be a good feeling though, knowing that your engine is even cleaner than it was before. Briefly I was dissapointed about the lack of smoke from my seafoam exercise but now I know that I can run another 60K miles (or longer) without gumming up the interior of the motor too much.

Dude, who gnawed on your cables and cords? They look chewed.
As for the hose, I can't believe it is so easy to pull like that, there weren't any rings holding it in place?
How did you hold it at 6k? I thought the limiter won't let it go over 4500 when revving.. are you sure?
