Post subject:  Squeaky Breaks

I recently had new pads and rotors installed, about 4,000 miles ago. Right before I got it checked and replaced, my breaks were squealing really loudly, most likely because the pads were gone and things were gouging my rotors. But now, I'm getting squeaking again from the front. It is noticable after the truck has sat for a while, like 7-8 hours or so, also more noticeable when spending that time in the sun. Is this something I should be concerned about? The pads cant possibly need to be replaced already, right?

Do you live near the ocean? I do and I get a lot of squeaks after 7-8 hours, the pads are metallic and I think they oxidize a little from the moisture in the air.

It's worse in the winter but it goes away after a couple stop signs.

I had to get my brake pads replaced with less than 5k miles on them on my old XJ. They started metalicizing, but they were under warranty and they were replaced for free. No more squeaks.

Did you get a good quality pad and rotor? This is the most important part.If so,then you may want to pull the calipers off(easy enough to do)and lightly lubbricate the backside of the brake pads completely with a high temp.brake lube.In my experience with squeeling noises,I have found that the noise is caused from harmonic vibration between the pad and caliper, and usually not between the pad surface and rotor. The lube should dampen this noise.

Dealers will replace your OEM brakes with OEM brakes so it's not going to be an issue of quality. But Ron has a very good suggestion about getting the backing plate of the pad lubed with some high themp grease.

Stop back at the dealership on your way home from work or on a lunch break and see if the guys can squeeze you in.
