| Post subject: | Thoughts on mopar side rails |
What is the purpose? Or are they just for looks? I'm thinking about getting some in graphite metallic to match my rims and give my stock kj a modded look. I like the graphite metallic because they match my rims. Anyone have these, maybe a pic or 2 so I can get a feel for what it will look like? Thanks for the input. |

Mopar side rails, brush guards, etc, are over-priced and strictly for looks, IMHO. I wouldn't expect any real protection from them. For the same money you can usually get something that's actually sturdy. The downside is that real wheeling armor is quite heavy and you will lose some street performance and MPG. |

i found a smoking deal through a dealer in another state. It is going to cost less than 150 plus I save on shipping because I'm making my dad pick it up and he said he'd cover the shipping no pix from anyone though? |

Yes, because the hour of searching before I bothered to post this was very fruitful. I found rock rails, supersliders, step sliders, etc but only one side rail and that was on a renny. |

When I first got my KJ I looked into side bars but decided aginst them when most of what I read said if you plan to go off road they should be removed before trying to crawl over rocks. You loose height and they are not for protection. But if you do not drive over rocks... They do look cool. |

If so, they don't snag on rocks, however they don't protect as well as boulderbars. Boulderbars come out a little farther and protect the rocker panels a little better. Also the renny rockrails, although they hold up pretty well, will bend some and get banged up far more than boulderbars. An example of the rocker damage can be seen here

Why not get a good set of rockrails and spray paint them the color you want? Lots of graphite metallics in a spray can to keep touching up with as needed. |

Not like the stock renny. Here is a pic I found (MoladoGuy's Jeep, not mine) in the renny pic section
So pretty much the consensus is for looks only. I'm ok with that since I don't rock crawl anyways. My idea of wheeling is forest, fire or logging roads. Cost is a huge factor in my decision as well. Afterall, why do I need a $300 pair of rockrails if I drive down a forest road? I just want to add some bling |

Funny.... In canada, the mopar rails cost more than custom fabbed real rock rails!
Probably made here too. The last mopar skid plate I bought was shipped to me from the US and it had a big "made in Canada" sticker on it!!! How messed up is that? |

I live in AZ, plenty of rocks here too, but I try to avoid those. If I come to a large boulder in the road, that is my sign to turn around, not climb over it Plus, I'm not sure my apartment would appreciate me out there with a rattle can trying to get the "look" I want |

i beat my mopar rock reallys pretty hard and so far it just pushed it up closer to the rocker (instead of having a 1/2 inch gap mine is now hitting) but im ok with that.. they have paid for themselves 10 fold. If my jeep didnt come with them.. i would buy aftermarket like the purple ones in the post above me. either way is better than none! |
