Has anyone ever done a write-up of how to replace the fuel filter on an '04 gasser (or similar year) Liberty? From what I understand, the filter has a built in pressure regulator and is somewhere in the vicinity of "under the back seat". Asked the stealership and they said the filter NEVER needed to be replaced. I'm thinking about maybe dropping the tank a little and seeing what I can find out for myself. I'm a generator tech and so I just decided to distance myself from the stealership when the head of service said that a filter never needed to be replaced. HAH! I'm hoping that I won't have to go back to them to get the filter because it's obviously going to be pricy. Can anyone give me some direction with this, or share previous experiences? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S.- Almost at 101K miles, I figure I should change it for the first time! LOL

The fuel filter is supposed to be a "life time" filter but I don't buy that.I have replaced mine at 30,000,and soon will be replacing it again in 5000 miles when I hit 60,000.

You do need to drop the gas tank about 3"-4",you can't miss it it's right on top of the tank toward the front of the tank. There is a "access" panel in the rear cargo area but you need to rip half the intior out to get to it then trying to reseal it is not fun. There's not much to it just lower tank a little(loosen 2 straps holding tank up and lower on a jack),unhook fuel lines, and unbolt filter and replace. To easy.

It is pricy, when I got mine at the dealer(only place that I found that could get it) it was like $150,but that was 2 years ago so it should be cheaper, hope so I got to replace it again in a few months.

Friggin' sweet! Thanks a bunch tjkj, I'm gonna start shopping around and see if I can't find an affordably priced replacement filter at the auto store. I can't wait to see what kind of crud I pull out of the old filter.

I think the fuel pump is in the gas tank, and the fuel filter is mounted externally in front of the gas tank. This is from a 2002 Service Manual CD.

Nobody said the filter was in the tank,it's mounted on the tank, but still requires you do drop the tank or rip the interior out to get to the access panel. The pump is in the tank,as is it is in most fuel injected vehicles.

I gotta tell you tjkj, no one can ever say that you do not do your maintenance. Good for you! (and congrats on working with rocklizard). I was just wondering if you felt anything that made you feel you needed to change it at 30,000, or was it purely a case of preventive maintenance? Did it make a performance difference?
Thanks...

The biggest reason for changing my fuel filter every 30,000 is all other vehicles I've ever owned required the filter to be changed every 30,000,why stop now.
