Yesterday, as I was driving home from work, I turned my fan on the inside up to 3. It was fine. Then all of a sudden, it stopped working and was working at maybe a 1. I have full speed (4) and then all the other ones are the same speed (which is almost non-existent airflow).

I was wondering what caused this, and how involved is it to fix it? And how much does it cost if I have to take it to the "stealer" (dealer). My boyfriend thinks it is a rheostat. His mom's Chrysler minivan has the same exact issue. Would this be covered under the extended warrenty I bought (the one offered by Jeep) when I got the Jeep originally? I don't think it should be considered a wear item!

The resistor block in the HVAC has gone bad. It's a ~$15.00 part from your local dealer, then drop the glove box [two tabs at the back - slide off] and you have access to the block. Use a torx bit (IIRC) to remove 2 screws. Then pull out and replace the resistor block and you'll be back in action.

You can search on here for better directions under the title Resistor block too

Wow...thanks! I will have to point my bf here and he will be able to help me out! At least it doesn't seem too complicated! I was afraid it involved pulling the whole dash apart or something like that that would cost a fortune!

Well, it is all fixed now. After yet another satisfying experience (NOT!) at the dealership. I took it in, when I made the appointment I told them I needed the HVAC resistor replaced, a state inspection, and a service (minus tire rotation). I got everything except the darn resistor, which was why I was rushing to get it in! But my salesguy rocks and made sure it was done while I waited. The jerks charged me over $100!!! It was 20.95 for the part, and $80 for labor!

I had the dealer do it cause if something got messed up, I can go after them, i can't go after my bf if he breaks something, and I would feel bad cause he would fix it for me too.

Next time it breaks, I will grow a pair and do it myself! It looked easy enough!
