Well out of knowhwere, yesterday i started noticing this rattling coming from the rear gate whenever i turn or go over small bumps or imperfections on the road. It is a very annoying rattle, i was wondering if anyone has ever had this issue before. Luckily for me it goes into the dealership tonight.

Probably the flipper glass. Three little words, "White Lithium Grease".

I have looked all over for a small tube for the rear flipper and also for the rear seat latches as they also squeak and rattle after a while. All I could find were large tubs at the auto supply stores. I finally found a small tube at ACE Hardware this weekend that I can stuff in the jockey box.

Well im under warranty so i just get the dealership to fix it. Its not a squeek, its something loose.

Another thing to check is the rear shocks , thought mine was the rear gate but then when I changed springs out and tightened up the shocks the noise went away! Sure sounded like the rear gate though

The rear gate can tweak. If you take the plastic panel off there are two tension type of wires going across in an X. You can adjust them. Or make the dealer do it. I vote for that.... :D

Its probably a faulty shock that holds the glass. these are holding it tight when it is closed.

If one of them if bad (even slightly) the glass will rattle...

I had this problem....

Instead of white grease I used some grey nylon electrical type of tape, cut it to width, and wrapped a couple of times around the backseat latch and the swing gate and window latches. Gives it a nice tight close and lasts a long time without having to regrease alot.

I had the issue with the mount that would require welding. It has gone away somewhat, but most of the time, I can't hear it between the tire noise and the stereo.

The dealer fixed it for me for about two days by somehow bending back a corner of the bracket on the inside of the door with some pliers. It came back later, but they did the work for free outside of warranty for me, so I'm not gonna complain.

I had the very same issue with my Cherokee a while back. I was on a trail just messing around. I drove up a large sand bank sideways to see the articulation the jeep had. I thought it would make a great picture so I opened the door to get out. Then I remembered that the camera was in a pack in the back. I opened the hatch and it was a little tight when I opened it. After I went to close the lift gate and put the camera away I was shocked to find out it wouldn’t close at all b/c the frame was twisted up. Once I backed down and had it level the gate closed fine but from then on I always had a rattle over any bumps in the back. I guess the hatch was holding everything together and by opening it I permanently bent twisted the body of the jeep.

I have a feeling the liberty won’t have the same problem just based on the different rear gate design but I’m certainly not going to test it out.
