well im a lil pissed at myself... i went to change the oil....found the drain plug no problem drained the oil.....next came the filter....how the hell do you get it off....i mean i tried to go from the bottom....didnt work....tryed to squeeze in through the top....no go.....then....i forget to take all the used oil in the bucket far enough out from under the jeep and when i push it off the little wheel things it tips over all the oil all over the garage....so i siad w/e just left the filter on and filled it full of new oil....so is there any special way to change the oil filter....i have a renegade so i have full skids and everything....i changed all the oil on my other vehicles but they all had easy access to filter and drain plug. Maybe this is just a truck that I'm going to just have the dealership deal with it all the time.....srry bout the grammer and all the ... but im frustrated and not in the mood to type |

Should be easy to get to from the top. If your hands are oily then it may be hard to take off. Especially if it was a MOPAR filter put on by factory or dealership people. Get an oil filter wrench....my first oil change I stabbed a screw driver through the filter to get it off since it was on so tight. Good luck. |

Ahhh, I have the towing package too but maybe my fan shroud is different than yours. I can get my hand down there no problem. What year is yours? |

I do both of mine from underneath. It is tight but doable. If this is the original filter, it is going to be on there tight and the gasket is probably baked on there as they don't lube them from the factory. Good luck! |

Filter access can be a pain with the tow package. You have to reach it from below. This is a pretty common question, so someone else has probably already answered it better than I will. You could try a search. But I usually lie completely under the jeep with my head below the front bumper, where you can look up and get a glimpse of the filter. It takes some experimenting to maneuver your arm up to it. It's sort of automatic for me now, so I might be misremembering, but I think I put my arm up between the airdam and the sway bar. Oil-change places sometimes remove the engine skid to get better access. But that makes a dirty job even dirtier. Someone else had a good tip for when you remove the filter: Use a ziplock bag and put it over the filter before you unscrew it. Then the filter falls into the bag. It helps catch the mess because you kind of have to twist around a bit sometimes to disentangle your arm at that point. If this is the vehicle's first oil change, you might find the filter tough to remove. They come from the factory torqued on like they didn't want it to ever come off. |

Even though I am an Amsoil dealer, Amsoil does have a by-pass oil system. this gives you an addtional fileration system but the best part is you can relocate your filters yes I said filters as in 2. but by relocating them you can mount you filter in a more assable location making th filer change a whole lot easier plus by switching to synthetic you wont have to do it more often a win win situation no matter how you look at it. Yes the up front expence is a little high but the down the road rewards will be greatly appriciated. Go To : http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/bf.aspx |

Sounds like a bad day working on the Jeep(Did you work on a Sunday? I have the bigger shroud and I cant even see the filter from the top, pretty much impossible to get to it from the top. I have a oil filter cup that goes over the end of the filter. I use a 3in extension and a 1/4in ratchet to get it off. If it is the first time the oil has been changed, I recommend taking it to the dealer since they over tighten the filters from the factory. |

its got 50,000 dealer did the last oil change. Can I just add new oil forget about the filter and then next time I can just have the dealer change it, or is that a bad idea? |

I wouldnt do that. You can change the filter though without changing the oil again. Just be sure to top off the oil afterwards. |

Go To : http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/bf.aspx I'll be doing an install and write-up on the remote/bypass system on my SFA KJ in the near future. I might even incorporate an oil cooler into the system too. Hopefully I will find enough room for it all. |

About your spill: kitty litter. It absorbs the oil so well that you won't even know there was a spill if you crush it around with your shoe. On one of my recent oil changes the dang oil was so hot that I dropped the plug into my drain container and it plugged up the hole. The oil was so hot that there was no way that I was going to fish it out. I just sat there and watched that oil over flow everywhere. Man, I was pi#@ed. But a quick trip to walgreens, and 20 minutes later, you could not tell. The filter is SO tight from the factory that I brought it in to the dealer to have them loosen it. Their tech had no probs, and I drove it hope for the change. I can change it from the top easily, as I do not have the tow package (although I sure wish I did....). Don't give up...next time will be a breeze...Good luck... |

I have the same problem on my '03 Renegade with tow package. I can barely get the tips of my finger son the filter, let along get the thing off. I can change the oil in my XJ and YJ with no probalems, but the KJ goes to a shop to get the oil changed. I gave up on trying to do it myself. You'll want to change that filter. It's probably more important or just as important as the oil change it's self. |

Just do as JJ said: crawl underneath the front bumper and reach straight up. Another good trick is to use sand paper for a good grip. Once you figure it out the 1st time you will be good to go. I would go to your dealer, pull up to the garage and explain your dilemma. For me, the tech loosened it up for me and I drove home. I am going to order this: http://www.quickoildrainvalve.com/ so I can change out the oil easier in the future. I was concerned that it might get knocked, but I now have a skid there, so I feel it will be pretty protected. The oil will just flow out the skid hole with the twist of the lever. |
