Post subject:  Tip Start - starting procedure on new Chrysler/Dodge/Jeeps

I was just reading up on the 07 Grand Cherokee, 07 Commander, 07 Dakota, Dodge Nitro, and virtually every other Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle:

They have this feature called "Tip Start." Its like on newer GM cars, some Toyotas, etc, where you just turn the key to start and immediately release, and the car does the cranking/firing automatically....No need to hold it in Start.

I read it was an addition with the CANbus computer system.

Why didn't the Liberty get this until 2008? With the programming for the electronic throttle control, you'd think Tip Start woulda been included too...as every other Jeep now made has it.

Just a curiousity. Or does the 07 actually have it? I never did try this on mine...

Also, what do you guys think of this idea? Like it? Dislike it? Would you ignore it?

I just can't get excited about it, sorry. It's up there with push-button low-range selection. Gimme a lever to pull any day.

Oh, I agree w/the lever dealy. Heck, I have a classic Trans Am. You want to talk about old-school mechanical stuff.....

But I like the touchstart thing just because its "different."

And I see that the Liberty doesn't use the CANbus system. I thought it did...found I confused it with my parent's Grand Cherokee. Now I understand why we're left out

if they make it right, it won't. (I don't think chrysler will make anything %100 right, ever)

Yes, Tip Start or instant-on or crankless start is great. My uncle's ML350 has it, it starts immediately even in cold weather, eventhough it has nothing to do with that feature. It is incredible, all you have to do is turn the key and let go, as if you pulled a trigger.
Another greatest thing that is tied to it, constant on Radio power. It doesn't cut power like our idiotic electrical systems do. When you turn of the engine there is no power loss to anything that is in the vehicle, until you actually take the key out. So if you just wanna turn off the engine and chill, listen to music, you won't have to have that gap while your CD player searches for the song (Oh yes, at least we have to be thankful for Resume Play.. they didn't have that before our KJs.. they had to back to beginning of the CD...)

Anyway, it is great, it is convenient, and as much as I like mechanical lever to pull it to 4wd, I don't mind if some electronic robotic arm does it for me. As long as it works the same way and works good..

Um, maybe WAY back before the KJ, but even the 97+ XJs had that feature on the CD players.

Yea. My Mom's 06 WK has this, along with the new ign lock where the positions are LOCK-ACC-ON-START. Not only does it have the reserve for windows and radio, but if you want to leave them on longer than the delay (moving the car and then cleaning it or whatnot) you just turn the key to ACC....never blacks out off and on as there is no power interrupt.

 I kept getting pissed when I got my 07 KJ...I'd shut the jeep off and the radio would stop. Hehe.

everyone is spoiled these days, thats the problem, if it was up to me I would not even have power windows, they break big bucks to repair, all that stuff is fine when it works but someday......But then thats why I have some older toys so they will still be running when the KJ quits!

I wonder why you are so worried about things breaking, if they are used as per normal operations standards, I don't see why they should break. Things do break sometimes, I rather have my crappy automatic roll window break and get it fixed, than lean over to passenger's side and roll it up when suddenly the trunk in front of my discharges his fumes, and end up rear ending him because he stopped when I was trying to roll up the window...

My friend's Mercedes has a push-button start. You just have to have your "key fob" in proximity to the vehicle. If it's not near the car, nothing works.

The tip-start is a good feature, but if I'm going to have funky add-on features that might break one day, I'd take brake assist over tip-start anyday. My '86 Subaru Brat had brake assist (and so does the KK Liberty) and MAN was that handy!!

Hey, the 8-track player in our 76 Dodge van had resume play too! Picked up right where we left off every time we got in. :-)r

wow, that's some technology there :D I am sure many people still stick to their Casette walkmans just because they like to be able to start from where they left off.. haha

I love the idea of the keyless vecihle where you just have an RFID chip on your keychain. As you approach your car it unlocks and you walk away it locks. When you get in it, as long as you have the FOB on you you can start it and drive it.

I don't mind the push button starters. I have one in my S2000 (and had one in the formula car I used to race in the SCCA).

I'm not completely sold on letting the computer control the cranking/starting of the vehicle though. Under normal circumstaces I'm sure it works great. But in those odd-ball circumstances, it might take a human touch to get it started.

For example, I had a evap purge solenoid go bad (stuck open). So everytime I'd fill up at the gas station, fumes were forced into my intake manifold basically flooding it. That would make the mixture extremely rich, so I'd have to put my foot to the floor and crank for 10-15 seconds two or three times to get it to start. Just a slight inconvience with the current setup. With the computer controlling the startup, I'm not sure it would have gotten it started and you'd probably be calling for the flatbed.

Is this a creation for the lazy American? What the hell is so hard about holding the key for an extra half second while your motor starts? It's bad enough that most of us get into the car to run an errand we could easily walk to. Push button ignitions are actually a thing of the past, found on high end luxury cars along with push-button transmissions as found on the '76 Dodge Coronet. Because America is so overweight and lazy they apparently thought it was a good idea and a novelty to bring back. I can't imagine any other purpose for this feature. My question is as follows: I know on my '03 Renny that when I'm in 4-LO I don't need to push in the clutch when turning the key to move my Jeep. I usually use this feature when climbing my ramps to do an oil change or other undercarriage maintenance. Will this tip-start feature be disabled while in 4-Lo? The last thing I want is to drive up and over the ramps and end up high centered on them because the Jeep kept moving in an attempt to start.
