I just pulled my driveshaft off of my 2002 libby to grease the splines. It has those special boot clamps that require special tools to put on. Well I just replaced it with a good ole fashioned pipe clamp. What are the benefits of the factory boot clamp? Is it safe to use a pipe clamp in its place? Thanks |

A band clamp has a much better balance than a screw type clamp. The screw will act as a counter weight and put the shaft out of balance. If the clamp is on the half shafts you probably won’t feel the vibration. If you put the clamp on the drive shaft which is spinning 3.73 times faster than the wheels I’m sure you will feel a vibration. |

Screw clamp for 6 months on the passenger side...so far, so good. |

FYI - someone mentioned that the official Chrysler fix for an out of balance driveshaft was to attach 2 screw type band clamps and gradually seperate until the vibration went away (I wasn't impressed) however it points out that they are heavy enough to affect the balance - if it's a issue - put 2 on - with the heads on opposite sides - so that they cancel out. |
