Post subject:  Anybody have trouble selling their Liberty?

We have had our Liberty for sale for over a week now and have only had one hit. It was a scammer so I promptly told what to do with himself. It's in Auto Trader, of course they put it in the Truck Trader. I don't think that's helping any. Any Ideas? I'd like to stay away from ebay, that's just for those who want to get rid of something quickly. Anybody know someone that wants a nice Liberty?

yea, Ive been having alot of trouble selling mine too..

I guess I need to put it up for sell first! Which wont happen.. :D

hehe, anyway, its going to be hard to sell a Jeep that gets the MPG that it does. Most people are looking for CARS that get good mpg.

Might be priced a bit high...$13,500 is normal:

You never get out the mods you put in...sell what you can on the side. It does look good however...you can post on http://www.craigslist.org for free and might get some responses.

Yeah I think Libertys are a little hard to sell. I seen one sitting on the side of the road for a month. But for the right price you can sell anything pretty quick.

I see your point on the price. I swear, I checked Kelly Blue Book 3 weeks ago and private party value was just under 15k. That sucks.
BTW - this is not a "parting out" thread

I cant really speak to the pricing because Im not up to par with the information on that, I can tell you this, you are in a price range that is difficult to sell.

How many people have $15k in cash that they want to spend on a vehicle? Anyone?

Most anyone who has that much cash doesn't want to spend it all at once on a vehicle, and if they do, they have been saving and know what vehicle they want to spend that money on, you may or may not be that vehicle and you will have to wait a long time to find it.

Otherwise lets say you have 5k in cash and you want to buy a liberty, your likely to go out to any of the mega-dealers and get something off the lot, all cleaned up, probably with some sort of 30 day guarantee(maybe), or at least "pre-inspected."

Now buzz words and false promises like that don't work on me, but for most people they do, and with a dealer ready to give them financing and let them drive it out the same day it does work. "what can we do to get you into this vehicle today?"

Let me ask you this, would you rather list it at 15k and sell it in 3 months? or list it at 13k and sell it in 4 weeks? How badly do you want to sell it?

Also, consider listing it at 15k, not 14,999, personally when I look at ads the quickest way for me to tell its a dealer(who I WILL NOT buy from, period) is for price gimmicks like 14,999 instead of 15k.

Lastly, don't expect to get a dime out of any after-market goodies on the jeep, goodies are just that, goodies, they are nice things that can set your vehicle aside from the otherwise identical Jeep, but don't expect them to get you any more money over that otherwise identical Jeep.

Good advise guys. Price lowered to $14,000. I hate to sell it for less than that. It looks, feels and drives like brand new. I'm not in any real hurry to sell so I don't mind waiting. It just bothered me that there has been no interest in it.

I think $14,000 puts you in the ballpark. Make sure you use more than one method to sell. Auto Trader, Craigs List, ect.

I don't mean to burst any bubbles, but because you have a "worn or altered" suspension, you won't get as much as stock. On the Kelly Blue Book site, I think this automatically drops it from excellent condtion to good (or good to fair -- down one degree, just the same). By mentioning my lift in the appraisal process, my KJ, which has been well maintained, returned a Private Party Sale value of only $9,895.

I see lots of 1st-generation KJs on car lots for $12K-$14K, but I doubt anyone's paying that much after some wheelin' and dealin'.

I was going to trade my KJ in on a late-model used compact car (Pontiac Vibe GT or similar) to save on gas, but due to the KJ's low sale/trade-in value, my car payments would still eat up any money saved on gas. So, as long as gasoline engines are legal and gas is still affordable, I'll continue to slowly mod it over time and wheel it till it dies. It's a Jeep, and I'll have fun with it, even if it eventually becomes the "weekend toy."

By Kelley Blue Book Private party is $15,417. A dealer would list it for more...but neither would probably get that in the real world. You should definitely push to get the 14,999 and take the first $14,000 offer. It would help if you knew what the "loan value" was...if it is $11,500 then you are looking for a buyer with $4000 to put down and able to finance $11,500.

I really hate to tell you this, but even 14,000 seems way too high for me. I just bought a brand new 2007 Liberty Sport with 30 miles on it. Granted it's a manual 2wd, but we got it for 14700 due to huge rebates for 07's and dealers wanting to get rid of them. An automatic would add about 800 and 4wd would add about 2000. So were talking about 17500 for a brand new liberty sport 4wd auto. If it was an 07 with as many miles as you have on it, i might pay 14,000 (although thats a lot of miles in one year  ) . But for an 04 model i wouldn't. But thats just me.

Sweet looking liberty! You might be better off with ebay. I've had luck there with the last 2 i sold. Just got $1026 for an 89' mazda mpv with 149k miles on it  Then again i've sold a car in 3 days with autotrader. The problem with liberties is there are so many of them. I see them for sale everywhere.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're trying to compare here. There's probably a reason why a stripped-down, 2wd liberty sport was still sitting on the lot waiting to be sold.

Although, that might be the attitude a lot of people have outside of this board. Why buy a loaded, very nice looking and functioning KJ, when you can get a stripped down '07 without the miles for around the same price?

But on the other hand, I picked up an '04 Sport 4x4 with 50k miles for 11600. Factor in 3k for my trade at the stealership, sales tax, license and doc fees and I still walked out with a new car, to me, for less than 10k financed with nothing down.

Granted it isn't as nice as yours and doesn't have all the addons, but I feel like I walked out with a better deal than I could have gotten through a private dealer. Plus, I didn't have to explain all the things that needed to be fixed on the XJ (brake pads, rotors, front calipers, brake booster, master cyl and a/c compressor) that a buyer would have used to talk me down from the $4200 blue book anyways.

The reason is that new cars aren't selling very well right now across the board. Thats why there are huge rebates right now. The dealer i went to still had several new 2007 4x4 loaded Liberties on the lot. With a sticker price of about 23k take off the $4500 (i think thats what it was) rebate Chrysler is offering, and then negotiate with some leverage due to the 2008's arriving with a lower starting price than the 07's and you'll reach that price easy. It's been a bad year for automakers and the prices and rebates reflect that.

What I'm trying to compare is if a new one sells for the same or just a little bit more than a used, which would you buy?
