So here's a question for you all. I was driving my renny today and not 3-4 hours after parking it on my driveway I go to do errends. Sure enough it's dead, the battery is totally dead (never had a problem before). So I know that it was super low on gas so I put a gal. in it from gas cans at home. Start it up with a jumper box and it starts but will not run. WTF? It has about 65K and it's a 2003 Renny 5spd man. Help me..... -Seth

Man, i've got an '04 Renny 5spd with about the same miles. Hope it's just an isolated incedent but sorry to here about it. i'm no expert by any means but i'd look first at the battery & alt. The thought being that if the alt. went bad it could've drained/ruined the battery while driving??? Just my SWAG.

Anybody else??? :?

if the battery has broken a plate internally - it'll kill the voltage even if you can get it to start.
or if the alternator is dead - then you wouldn't be charging even with the engine running.

The battery is more probable - swap in a good one just to see if it runs.

one reason that it may not run, is that the CPU has lost all the electricity in it since the battery is tottally dead and it hasnt had time to re-learn everything.

Start it and keep ur foot on the gas and keep it running for about 2 mintues to be safe and all should be good.

but this will only work if your battery will hold a charge. I'd replace the battery and get someone to check the alternator most auto parts places will check it for free.

i had mine not start awhile back and took it to the dealership. the battery seal was cracked and drained all the juice out. check it first befor you spend your money.

ok so here is what I have so far. I cleaded and checked the terminals. They are fine. I tried to charge the battery but the charger says the battery is full (we know that that is not true) I hooked up a jumper box to the battery and turned it on and the car still would not stay running. Go from there....what's next?

Is it throwing any codes? Does it shake while it runs? Does a little orange key light up on the dashboard?

I also have an '03 85K miles. Started up fine at night, drove home. Next morning wouldn't start. Battery was totally shot, just lucky I made it home. Ran like crap even after jumped until the old battery was totally removed and the new battery put in. put in a good battery and test the charging system. On an '03 it's probl time for a battery anyway.

Eddo had that problem after a run in kentucky, maybe he'll chime in.
Apparently, even after charged/jumped, a dead battery in the KJ may keep it from running. He dropped in a new battery and all was well...

Sure enough it's dead, the battery is totally dead
disconnect the battery & check the voltage of the battery--- should be around 12.4 volts.

I know that it was super low on gas so I put a gal. in it from gas cans at home.

this has nothing to do with a dead battery condition.....lol...

Start it up with a jumper box and it starts but will not run.this indicates that ou need to disconnect the battery & swap with another. then try starting the jeep.

if the jeep does run then you still need to remove the positive battery cable to verify the altenator is working.

now if you have a volt meter you do not need to remove the postive battery terminal ,
just check the voltage at the battery with engine running battery voltage should be 13-14 vdc

so if ya aint got no meter...swap the battery & jeep will run.
once running pull the pos term off battery.
if jeep dies.. .bad altenator
if jeep still runs... just a bad battery. you got lucky...

If it's starting but not staying running it's not the battery. Or the alternator. If the battery was dead the truck wouldn't start. If the alternator was bad the truck would still run until the battery had no juice. Battery still has juice so it's not the alternator.

Spray some carb cleaner or other intake cleaner into the throttle body and have someone else start the truck. if the truck will run off of carb/intake cleaner than you have a fuel issue (like, maybe running out of gas?)

He said he started it with a jumper... battery or alternator, I'd say. See above for testing.

Post subject:  wont run

Most likely a dead battery. Most chrysler vehicles will have an idle control solenoid that will not allow the vehicle to idle if the battery isn't good. My brother was stuck in the hamptons and could get it running if he held the accelerator down, but no idle. New battery was all he needed. Something about the way its wired will not allow it to run with low voltage even though the solenoid only needs 5 volts. The magnum series motors and the 4.7 all have the same defect. Chrysler loves it because batteries are good money at the stealership.

Had the same problem in my 2003 KJ. Battery had a bad cell. I could jump it and it would start. But as soon as i took the cables off it wold die, unless I kept my foot on the accelerator. This is the problem meh_kick mentioned. Also had the same thing happen to me on my 96 ZJ.

If you still have your original 2003 battery it is time for a new battery anyways.

So here is where I stand......If you dont want to read on long story short it was the battery. So I go to sears with my old battery and the guy says that he will test it. The test will take anywhere up to 45min. He said that you connect the battery and it counts down from 100sec. at the end of those hundred seconds it will say how long it will have to test it for. The guy connected the battery and not 20sec go by and the thing spits out my battery and says that it's bad. I got the new battery (Die Hard Gold) and poped it in and it fired right up fast and strong.
Guys I just have to tell you thank you all so much for your help.....I was freaking out and you guys really calmed me down and put my midn at ease. So thank you all so much. I even got a new job and was not happy about it because of my KJ. So thanks again guys. Now I just have to wait for my Frankenlift to come in the mail I cant wait to have OME on all 4 corners. Talk to you guys later......... -Seth

Post subject:  How Much??

How much does the DIE HARD set you back?? About 2 months ago while shopping for tires, Sear said the new battery they were selling was as good or even better then the Opitma  . But then again back in the early '70's I remember my Dad talking about how difficult it was for manufactures to make a product for Sear,Because they set such a high standardws for Sears that even Firestone turned down the bid to make private label tires for Sear. So when I had Sears tell me they were droping the Optima because it was hard to keep up delivery. I am more inclined to beleive that Sears is so hard to deal with from a venders that Sears is so difficult that they just walk away just because the sale numbers would not justify the hassel of doing business. I know I'm talking about 40 years ago, not to mention Sears ownership has changed since then.
I apologize going off topic, But I'm someone out there can tell of their experience of a Sears battery vs. an Optima :?:

The kirkland brand from Costco is made by Johnson Controls, good deal for the price.
