Thinking about getting a defender rack... I need to know if the mounting brackets will work on the renegade roof rails. They are quite a bit thicker than the rails that come on the sports. IF I can use the rene roof rails with the defender rack, are they way too flimsy to even consider putting much of a load up there. Im considering putting my spare up there and maybe some bags from time to time, never exceeding 100lbs on the rack. What are my options if the rack needs different rails? I know RL makes some nice rails but are kinda pricey on top of a 400 dollar roof rack. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think they will work with the Rene rails.

You can mount the 4'x4'x4" Defender rack on the thicker renny rails, just get some 2 1/2" U-bolts and attach away, that's all the attachment kit for the KJ is anyway, pick some up at Home Depot for abot $6 instead of paying the $28 for the attachment kit.A Rockies guy(green renagade) had that same setup until he got some Rock Lizard rails, worked good and supported plenty of wieght.

Which measurement are you referring to when you say 2.5? The leg width (B on the picture)?

instead of getting the 400 rack, get the 400 roof rail'/rack combo RL has. low profile and you can toss whatever up there. i want it to strap my thule ski box up there. figure with the rails, crossbar and thule thats HIGH
