no worries guys, thanks for confirming that I wasn't the only one who ever had this....I think a replacement is in order...what kind of systems are you guys getting with the mp3/iPod capabilities...what looks good? whats worthwhile? what might work with a tight budget? LOL

There are a number of options out there right now. Most decks come with an Auxiliary in so that you can run your iPod/MP3 player from your headphone jack.
Not a bad option, BUT you do have to a) deal with two volume controls, b) deal with the batteries running out c) deal with a cable hanging out of the front and d) having to change songs through the iPod/MP3 player. All livable options and the one I chose because I'm a tightwad. The other options (listed below) would have cost me an extra $80 to $150 over and above the Sony CDXGT210 I purchased from FutureShop for $99 CAD at the time.
You can get decks out there that have a USB input on the front of the deck. If you have an iPod, you can charge your iPod, have the various artists appear on the deck screen, shuffle through artists and playlists in folders as well as have the iPod put out music at a constant level that is controlled by the deck. Most of the features listed for the iPod will work for a standard jump drive.
The problem is that you still have the wires out the front, as well as have to put your iPod somewhere. If you just have a jump drive, well that sticks out the front of your deck.
If you do go with a deck that has an iPod control, you can run the cable from the BACK of the deck to your glove box and control what you listen to from the deck itself. The deck will also charge your iPod and run it at a constant level without having to turn up the iPod.
Great features, BUT you will often spend more money for the deck itself, and will often have to lay out extra money for the iPod cable ($30-$100) in addition to the deck.
In either case, you will have to purchase an adapter for the deck to fit into your dash (cost me $25 CAD). I also recommend going with a harness that mates up with the factory harness for your jeep. It was around $15 CAD. It is REALLY nice to be able to wire your deck up when the deck is on your workbench, then clip it into your jeep without the need to clip/splice wires in your vehicle.
You will also need an adapter for the factory radio wire to plug into the new deck. I don't know why the kj's have a different plug, but they do. That's another $13-ish.
Most of the name brand decks out there are pretty decent. However, if I was concerned with the latest and greatest system that could run a 2000W system, I would have spent more than the $99 I did. I'm just at that point in my life where I want something that sounds good, doesn't cost me a fortune, and wont rattle the fillings out of my head. I would rather spend the money on mods that will make my jeep go further down the trail
