I recently bought a Startech steeringwheel for my 2005 KJ. It is a very nice leather/wood steeringwheel.
Last week I asked the dealer to install the wheel. To my suprise the dealer was not able to remove the stock steeringwheel.
The bold was to tight they told me.
Is there a (simple) way to remove the steeringwheel? Did any of you ever did that job?

Is that Startech compatable with the Airbag?

Excuse my tackyness, but how much was that thing and any pics of it.

I am sure somebody here has removed the stock wheel, just never seen any posts for it.

Got my curiosity.

I do know that you need to kill the electrical system, completely remove the battery and wait 30 minutes or so to allow the air bag capacitors to discharge before even going near it. Even though the battery is gone the bag can still deloy and ruin your day.

The anti-litigation person in me will tell you to disconnect the batt cable 30 mins prior to service.

The normal part of me would just leave the key off and do the work.

remove the airbag, two 10mm bolts on either side, pull airbag forward, disconnect the two airbag connectors from the module, disconnect horn connection.

set airbag aside, remove center steering wheel bolt(13mm)

you will either need a special steering wheel puller, or a gear puller, I used the gear puller because it was the easyest thing.

if you use a gear puller it would be a good idea to leave the bolt loosely in place so the puller shaft does not push on the threads for the steering wheel bolt.

Also, it would be a good time to add in the buttons for cruise control(if you dont have it) or the steering wheel mounted radio controls(if you dont have it)

reinstall is the same as reverse.

Thank you for the replies. It is the same wheel as on the pictures. Only mine has a wooden upper half. It is a very nice steeringwheel. I payed only 15 euro for it ($ 22.50) on Ebay. List price is 700 euro!! ($ 1,050.00). It is brand new, never installed before. I sure hope it can be installed. Otherwise I wil have to sell it :(
