Get a long philips screw driver, there is a single screw holding the radio/dash trim that is around the radio and the a/c controls.
The screw is located right next to the cig lighter all the way in the back.
If you got silver accent, put a towel in front of the shifter so it doesn't get scratched.
and then just pry/pull the accent. There are 4 screws holding the radio in place, unscrew and pull the radio, unplug the harness.

I also replaced mine, but with Kenwood USB system. You can buy any type of radio, they all will work with Jeep, as long as you buy all the adapters, faceplate frames, etc... Or you can buy a radio from Crutchfield and all the stuff you need including free wiring harness, etc along with instructions.

You can also go to best buy or circuit city type of store in your area, but remember they will charge you a lot of money for installation, and even if you install yourself, they will charge you for every small thing like harness, wires, face adapter, etc......

The radio is VERY easy to remove from the dash, although I'll have to throw in a little disclaimer here as I did my work on an 03 and I'm not sure if there were changes in the 04 model, but I doubt it.

First step is to remove the screw down by the cigarette lighter or power source if you don't have an ashtray. It's in the back of that little cubby hole.

Once removed, the panel is held on by press clips. You will have to start by pulling from the bottom and work your way around the panel as each one releases.

When the panel is off, then you will have to remove the 4 screws what hold the radio in. They are on each corner of the mounting bracket and are right up front. Easy access.

Slide the radio out, disconnect the harness and radio antenna. If you are are putting an after market deck back in, you will need the adapter plate to fill in the extra gaps left by the bulky stock deck. Should run you around $20-25.

I also recommend that you get yourself an adapter to plug the after market deck into the stock harness. MUCH easier to wire up the new deck when it's on your workbench not to mention you can avoid cutting and splicing wires when you don't have to. The adapter will run you about $15.

If you want the radio to work, you will also have to buy another adapter to change the plug style from the stock to after market. You're looking at $10-15.

Installation of the after market deck when using the adapter plate is the reverse of the stock deck removal.

As for the after market deck itself, all of the standard CD players will fit. There are some bigger decks out there that you may have to work with, but it doesn't sound like you are going that way.

EDIT: OPPS! hyedipin beat me to it....

i think both of you left out the hardest part...at least for me....maybe they changed the design, but my hvac controls are also mounted to the bezel which keeps the bezel right in the way. you can get the radio out but it was a pain for me. I ended up removing the vacuum lines and power connectors for the hvac to I can completely remove the bezel and hvac assembly. the newer KJ's might be different.

Yeah, they are mounted but you are not going to remove the trim completely.
Here is the trick, you put the shifter in 1 (make sure you have the hand brake applied!!!!) and once you remove the screw, just open it from top keeping the bottom almost-attached-like. That way you will have a lot of room to work with. I tried to remove the a/c controllers, started getting PSSSSSSSSSS air leak, freaked out and decided not to touch them.

GREAT your the reason for Global warming!!!

Just the vacum lines. and they all reconect just fine.

I have taken the bezel off to install a cell phone mount, and VERY easy to do so. But Is VERY easy to scratch the brushed aluminium on it so use the rag.

I didn't remove any of the hvac wires. I put my shifter in R (HAND BRAKE ON as it should be with a standard) then pulled the panel out enough so that I could turn it 90 degrees.
