Post subject:  Removing Jeep Badges

Hey guys it possible for me to remove my Jeep badges, paint them, and somehow get them back on? Are they just stuck on? Do you just "pop" them off. I have a silver '07 sport, with the grey fenders. Yet as you guys know the door handles, rails...etc are black. Then Jeep tops if by putting chrome badges on it. I want to take these off, paint them black and re-apply? Could I reuse the same ones, or do have to order factory replacements, paint, then apply?.....Help me wise forum gods......

Nate

No offensive to you, this is meant as a general comment, but its interesting how different things bother different people.

Now an answer to your question, I doubt you will get them off intact, you would need to order new ones and paint them black, you could go the other route and get chrome covers for the handles(which IMO looks like it belongs on a ghetto-beater).

Did you try to search for it here on the forum? I know there was a thread awhile back about using the hair dryer or something to get the badges off. I think they are on with just double sided tape, a strong double sided tape.

Edit: Here is the thread http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=16044&highlight=badges+remove

Pulling the badges off instantly means they will not go back on. The double sided tape is a one time use kind of thing.

Just buy new ones off of eBay and paint them.

That's what I'd do, a local car/auto shop sells letters which I've used to do the CDKJ under the 3.7L. They are very sticky & once on they don't move, so take care when doing your bit.

I agree with sleeve, once you remove them they are shot. Plus it is always a pain to get them aligned properly otherwise they will pretty bad. Just remove them see how you like it without debaged, if not you can always buy a set and paint them. I don't know if the paint will hold well on those shiny slippery new badges.

use hair dryer to take them off and then just have someone print up the badges you need , would be yours then with non other like it. Thats why I did mine did not want to go to the mall    and have 5 others sitting there looking just like it. Although mine does stand out now a little in the mall parking lot!

Another trick is to use fishing line to saw the badges off. Wont damage the paint and should get the badges off without damaging them. The hard part is to get the red 3M tape off the badges.

Goo-Gone, Fishing Line and a hair dryer... thats all you need! and if the Goo-Gone isnt working then take one tespn of cooking Oil to 3 Tblspn's of non curnchy penut butter, mix, then apply to sticky mess on Jeep, leave on for at least one hour or over night, then just wipe off PB and sticky mess come right off with it! :D

the Goo-Gone should help in removing sticky tape from the badge as well

Badges, We don't need no stinkin badges.

When you do take them off take some pics of the process, I am curious as to how easy or hard it will be.

Are the badges just stuck on or do they also have pins on the back for alignment purposes?

Older XJ's had pins, my 95 doesn't.

very easy to take off mine went from with all badges to NAKED in less than 30 minutes, cant even tell where they were, biggest difference is the hood

The badges are just stuck on. However the side moldings, if you want to take them off, do have alignment pins along their length.

Makes the fishing line method more difficult, but not impossible.

Super safe, its an old Motorcycle Show bike trick. i used it on my bike to get the badges off and used it on my Jeep to get the dealer badge off. its how you can get anything sticky off, the extra oil added is just for cars, as the 3m tape they use would give superman a good run for his $$$
