Post subject:  Hitch wiring harness??

Which hitch wiring harness do I need to get? On the mopar site they have 2 different ones depending on if the vehicle has an overhead console. I put one of those in myself.

I see both 7 way and flat 4s out there

majorly confused :?: :?

it depends on what your trailer has, if you bought the tow package it has both 7 flat and 7 round, all of the towing i do if it has 4 flat i use it if not i dont have lights

i bought mine from Summit Racing for about $80 if i can remember correctly and its a reall easy T harness plugs right into the taillights

usually the 7 round is on bigger trailers like 16ft + and most cargo trailers and boat, and PWC trailers are usually 4 flat

i would go with the 7 round b/c someone makes a 7 round adapter to 4 flat i beleive you can get one from Summit Racing as well or JC Whitney

what do you plan on towing the most?

Back when I put in my hitch I got the MOPAR 4-pin because all I was planning on hauling was a utility trailer that would hold 2500lbs and this would be way less than the limits of the KJ of 5000.

If you are planning on getting closer to the towing max of the KJ you will need trailer brakes and thus will need the 7pin to utilize a brake controller.

Another thing to consider, if you have a 7-pin on the KJ you can use an adapter to plug a 4-pin trailer in....there is not a safe way to plug a 7 pin trailer in to a 4 pin KJ.

DONT DO IT!!!!!

go with U-Haul it $16 and installs in less than 10 min. even has the nice little LED's on the plug to show you that your lights are working fine. (or if the trailer harness is the problem)

After doing mine, Mobar wanted close to $50 on one and $100 on the other.

Plus you can run both the 7 or 4 pin in the same harness.

What ever brand you install, I'd recommend getting a 7 pin harness on the vehicle side. This way, you and your liberty will not be limited to only towing trailers without brakes. If you do tow a railer with electric brakes, don't forget to pick up a good brake controller.

For the 7 pin to 4 pin adaptor - try to find one that had a hard plastic casing to keep the door from pushing down on the adaptor. I've had the little flipper door push out a trailer harness once on my Liberty.

Uhauls have been known to short out go to what is it???cant think of the site now someone will, but Uhauls only lasted about 5 pulls for me and I know some other people have had problems also. If Summits is 80 bucks that at least 60 to high!!

I got a plug and play 4 pin harness from a hitch shop for $43. Take off the taillights plug in the harness, put the taillights back on. Simple as that. I went with the 4 pin cause all I really tow in my M416 trailer that is converted to 4 pin.

I think they make a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter. Not sure if they go the other way or not.

thanks for all the replies, I guess I will just have to really check what the trailer has. I never really tow, but I plan on moving soon and getting one of those u-haul trailers. The manual says they either have a 4-way or bullet connector, guess I will have to check and see which one.

uhauls have the regular flat plug

go to etrailer.com 37.95 easy plug in and I have had it on for over 80000 miles and pulled trailers several thousand of those and it works great, Uhauls shorted out after 2 short trips, took it back and they said "

Yes we know they do that, Thanks for telling us something we already know, would you like to buy another one? " my answer was two words,......

Must be a bad plug, Ive had mine hanging loose under my KJ for about a year now, Pull at least one of 6 trailers i have once a week, Ive yet to have any problems... and if i do, $16 again will replace it, and im still $60 under what mopar wanted...

I don't remember what I paid for the Mopar harness. But it was very well designed. It plugged right into the vehicles harness, was already all bundled up and insulated, and even had all the plastic clips installed and correctly spaced to fit the existing mounting holes. It included an enclosure for the 7 pin receptical, etc. It was very well thought out. I think it might have also included the 7 ping round to 4 pin flat adapter, but I can't remember.

I had a no-name brand (uhaul maybe) on my Grand Cherokee and it didn't come close to comparing. The wires weren't bundled, it didn't have a mounted receptical, the wires were always sagging down under the vehicle.

sagging wires thats what wire ties are for.

UHaul plugs are bad I know of at least 5 people who have had them and they went bad in a short amount of time, even if it is 16 bucks my time is worth way more than that to go buy another one and replace it

Best to go with the mopar unit as it makes use of the stock plug and doesnt run off of the tail lights.

$130 isnt bad for the 7pin if you know what all it comes with(relays and such).
