Post subject:  ESP as a LSD...anygood

Hey guys,

Bought an 07 a couple months back and haven't had a chance to wheel it yet (waiting for skids). So ESP acts a limited LSD, or so the theory goes. How good of a job does it do? It can't be on par with say a Detroit TruTrac. Anybody with some 2 cents throw them my way.

It depends. It keeps both wheels moving, but not very fast. In the mud you need to remember to disable the throttle control feature or it limits your throttle. The ESP eliminates the nasty situation in a limited slip where one wheel spins and nothing happens... but it does not transfer as much power as a TruTrac, from what I have seen.

Why not have both? That is what I will do when its time to change the diff fluid. The TruTrac will always have grip thanks to the ESP braking only the slipping wheel and not the other three.

I have the ESP and all that Jazz. Mine seems to always "Malfunction" when the going gets really tough and slow.

Cant say Im a fan of it. We'll see what happens if I decide to throw a TT in the front. Might help with the one wheel in the air situation.

I spent 3 weeks in Baja 2 weeks with my CRD and 1 week with a gas Liberty. On the washboard roads of baja I had to turn that ESP off or it would make it hard to steer, locking up 1 wheel or another is not good at 50 mph on washboards.

It's not bad, not as good as a detroit TT, would be awesome I believe with a TT , I read in truck trend that the new KK traction control system is much better and works very well. It's better than nothing, but I believe in conjunction with a TT, it would be a very capable pair, I hope soon to find out.

Guys we wheeld a harder trail with a JK 4 door and all it had was a BB and 33" Iroks
the ESP stuff KICKS BUTT out on a trail
I would put it up against any LSD any day
I have seen guys with TT front and rear in a TJ have trouble we walked right over
I was on the rig with the owner who also wheels a XJ on 36's with an atlas twin stick so you know he wheels hard
and we were both blown away by how good it works

yes it sucks in mud but as far a trails go I think it is great and best of all has great road maners

they have 2 different systems 1 does the steering wheel and the other does the breaks ,at least that is my understanding
I know that if you lift a JK over 2" you have to adjust the steering wheel back to center or it will not drive
The jeep will force you to turn

The only complaints ive had with mine are with mud, as well. As soon as I can afford it I'm putting a real LSD in the rear. For now, It works pretty well though. In the mud it just kills your speed, you need some wheelspin to keep up your momentum. Although I'll have to wait 'till I get my Grabber AT2's on before I can say for sure. Maybe with real tires it'll work better.

Also with 4hi in the snow, it's awesome.

When the KJ is put into 4WD LO, ESP and TCS are disabled EXCEPT for the limited slip feature of the TCS. Once speed reaches 30 MPH, ESP turns on again but TCS stays off.
ESP shuts off in 4WD LO so it does not interfere with off-road driving.
I got to test this feature under difficult circumstances when I went up to Twin Cone with the LOST CO chapterlast month. I thought it did well despite torque-loss due to my 32" tires and stock gears.
