I may have found the reason why my daughters 03 gets better mileage than my 05. It seems the 03 comes with P235/70R16 tires (16x7 rim) and my 05 comes with P235/65R17(17x7.5 rim). I guess a 17 inch tire takes a bit more gas to push it around and around. Also, My wife's 02 comes with P215/75SR16 (16x7 rim),this being a pre-lowered so maybe that has something to do with her tire size. All sizes quoted from the door label. Any ideas on when and why they went to the 17's?

As far as I know 05 and above have 17" rims. The 04 and below have 16".

17 inch rims were an option. 16 inch rims are standard

My 05 has the optional 17" rims. Tire size is 235/65/17. It's hard to find A/T's in that size but I'm running Hercules Terra Trac A/T's. I think 16" rims are the best all around.

my 03 came with 235 65 17's, chrome no less. They are worn out and it is just about "tire time"

I get 18 in town, 20 hwy. Bigger tires, less milage (tradeoff)

My wife's pre-lowered 02 shows on the door P215/75/SR16. First of all I can't find this size anywhere and what is the SR all about and why only a 215 back then? Last time we put tires on it the Jeep Stealership sold us P225/75/R16's. I can get the Destination LE's in this size so that's probably the way I am headed.

I am also having a hard time finding AT's in size P235/65/R17 for the 05. I don't need tires yet but am just browsing around. The Destination LE's come in this size as well so if the wife's work out ok I will probably just follow suit.

BTW, ain't Jeep shopping just soooooo much fun? :D

I put on 235/65/17 Hercules Terra Trac A/T's in that size on mine. There are not too many choices in an A/T that size (hardly any). I really wanted BFG A/T KO's but they didn't make them in that size. So far they have been pretty good. They are quiet on road and good in snow and mud and mild to moderate off road conditions. I have not done any hard core wheeling though.

I went with American General's Prospector SUV's in that size, before I got a lift. They were pretty good tires, even in fairly deep snow. I don't think they were an A/T but they still worked much better than any of the stock Goodyears.
