Post subject:  Dumb Tire Question

I know I am showing my ignorance here but you can't learn these things if you are afraid to ask. Can I move my 17 inch tires and rims that came on my 05 to my wifes pre-lowered 02? She needs new tires and I am thinking of getting AT's for my 05 so I want to put the 17's on hers and get me some new rims and AT's for my 05, probably something in the 16's? any ideas?
Thanks in advance for playing along,
Jason

Here's a pre-lowered with 2005 Liberty Limited 17X7.5" rims and 245/65R17 Destination AT's.

KY,
No lifts on that? any rubbing with those tires? Looks sweet! I am trying to save money on tires. The wifes 02 needs tires and I want AT's on my 05 so I am thinking she gets my tires (new Kumho Solus KR21's P235/65/R17's on Limited Dakar 17 rims that came on it from CarMax) and I get new rims and AT tires on mine...win/win I think. Think those 245's would fit on my 05 without any lifts?

It's a lot taller than the newer ones. The dealership always calls it factory lifted after they ask and I tell them it's the stock springs.

That's the stock springs and Monroe Sensa Track shocks and struts on a June 2001 build with the off road group and tow package. The Jeep has had about 4.5-5 years to sag in that picture. No rubbing at all. It handles and grips so much better than stock with the 235/70R16 SRA's it's like driving a completely different vehicle. At over 6 years old, after hitting the suspension fairly hard, it has started to rub a little on the fog lamp doors when turnining hard while backing up. The combination really works well. Do a clevis up front, and an extra spring isolator each side in back and you should be set for some 245/65R17's on your '05. 8)

I have 245/70/R16 Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenzas on a stock '03 and they don't rub at all. According to tirerack.com, they measure 29.4" tall, or about .4" taller than stock. The extra width (1 cm) makes the Jeep ride so much better, you wouldn't believe it. It handles better around corners, it's more stable on the highway, and it just looks better overall. I used a GPS and found that my speedometer used to be off a little over 1 mph, but we checked it again with the new tires and now it's dead on. The Alenzas were one of the few tires in that size that I could find in blackwall, so that influenced my choice a lot.

Forgot to mention the speedometer correction. 29.5" tires made mine match the gps and radar guns too. I actually had 245/70R16 Michelin Cross Terrains on the stock 16X7" rims before. Didn't even come close to rubbing anywhere. They rode slightly smoother than the Destination AT's, but they actually didn't handle as well. That's to be expected though. The extra 1/2" rim width and lower profile made a pretty big difference when staying with basically the same size tire.
