| Post subject: | found fluid under my jeep |
I have 04 liberty Limited. I noticed a fluid patch under the Jeep today, looked and cannot see where it is coming from, I do not think it is oil as it did not smell like oil. The patch was about the size of a volleyball. It has 52K on it, any ideas of what might be leaking or a place I should look, I Know very little about motors....thanks |

Where was the patch of oil in relation to the Jeep? Front/back? Driver or Pass side? |

It could be AC condensate drip - don't forget the compressor runs while the vent setting is on Defrost, Defrost & feet and feet only. |

I just checked and the fluid is red, transmission, diff, power steering.......what would I notice if these fluids were low? Can I check these fluids? is there other fluids that would be red? |

Transmisison or Transfercase. Front diff and PS fluid will not be red in color. |

Visual inspection of the t-case and tranny doesn't show any drips or oil "dampness" does it? See if the rubber boot on the tcase to driveshaft is wet |

it appears to be coming from below the power steering fuild box, I checked the fuild inside and it appears to be the same color (redish), more towards the front of the motor......so I am assuming it PS fluid, and ideas of common leak problems with PS? |

Nothing real common that Im aware of. Check the power steering fluid to see if its low. If that much has leaked out you will easily be able to tell. Go ahead and check the tranny fluid while your in there(Tranny warm and in N). Visually check the power steering hoses under there. Some of them rub together which would easily cause a leak. I put wire loom on some of them to prevent that.
If its the power steering pump, thats a fairly cheap and straight forward repair if your handy in the garage. |

Guys I totally forgot... The Coolant is also red in color. Look for a pinhole leak in the radiator on the plastic endcap. Typical failure point is above the upper radiator hose. |

Could also be a trans cooler line. What year is your KJ? if it's an 02-3 with only 50k miles, it could be old enough for the rubber lines to start to dry rot, since it sits a lot. Then again, I have almost 97k on my 02...mine has no time to rest |

If the fluid is oily and red probably the atf+4 in the steering. The coolant wont feel oily. Technical terms ya know |

Well originally they said use ps fluid then in 04 chrysler switched there tune and called for atf+4. Dont mix but if they had to replace the pump they would switch over. I had to research this quite a bit as my owners manual says not to use atf (2002) and mechanics manual says to use atf+4 which is the current standard from my understanding. Chris |

Wow, now I've learned something! I had always been under the impression that the PS fluid was all that ever was used in the PS pump. I wonder what the outcome will be from the visit to the dealer. (any update?) |
