Post subject:  I need a trailer

We took a family trip down to OBX for a whole week and...DANG we haul a lot of junk. I want a trailer. I priced trailers though and even a cheapo donut-tired Home Depot jobby is $500.

For $500, I'd much rather have a military surplus trailer, like a M-416 or something similar (1/4 ton mil-spec)

I've already found:

http://www.olive-drab.com/od_mvg_vehicl ... ailers.php

http://www.colemans.com/milveh.htm

http://www.govliquidation.com/list/c7588/lna/1.html

http://www.sprucemtsurplus.com/Trailers.html

And, of course, I've also looked on Craigslist and ebay.

Does anyone know where else I might look? I really want to find something that I can pick up for $500 or less.

going to be really hard to find a really good 1/4 ton for 500, everyone thinks they have a classic trailer if it even looks like a 1/4 ton so they want at least 500 even if its all rusted out!
BUT if you do find some in that price range let me know ASAP. Been searching everywhere for 6 months now! I need one as well!

Have you looked into the hitch carriers Dog_party? I have one and it pretty handy.

Great for carrying wood, coolers, bigger suit cases, etc. Only problem is rain but a tarp will fix that.

I'm actually in the same predicament as you. I found a great trailer at Tractor Supply. It is a 4' X 6' w/ a 1 ton axle and 5 lug D.O.T. certified wheels and an expanded metal floor. It doesn't say so in the ad, but I went and looked at it at my local store and the bed actually tips down (dumps) for easier unloading. All for $369 :-) I'll try the link here:

I got one at HD a couple years ago. It is the Snowbear brand but it looks like they don't make the same one anymore. I got it because it came with the side, tilts to dump, has 12"wheels and highway speed bearings, tilts and had a 2" ball. I think it has 2500lbs capacity.

Here's a military one near that was near you Dog_party.... http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/sh ... p?t=850200

Another military link... http://www.surplusjeep.com/VEHICLES.htm

and another.... http://www.g503.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=18

Edit: Here's a cool location in NC... nice M332 for $300.... http://www.whiteowl.com/trailers.html

I've seen some crazy prices on some old M416s (and similar)! But I've seen a couple that move here and there for $500 or $600. Just keeping my eyes out. The nice part? My father-in-law said he wants to go 1/2 on a trailer with me. 8)

If I find some place and can set up and kind of group-buy, or something similar, I'll let you know Tommudd. I'll keep this thread updated with anything I find.

Thanks for the link Maximum Carnage!! Bookmarked! That will be referenced often if I do find an M416!

I like the hitch-carriers JeepJeepster. My father-in-law offered his when we went down there. I could put it on my front hitch...if I ever actually install the dang thing. It's almost useless on the rear-end of my truck though. When we go on a family trip the rear of the Jeep has my Thule SpareMe bike rack and two bikes on it. I put the hitch carrier on under it and I had enough room for...a pizza box. Not the best use of space, so I left it off. When I get the front hitch on, I'll get one of those for the front. It will probably hold a big cooler and fishing poles, so rain isn't a problem.

That's the same trailer I've been looking at SavageUrge. I hadn't found a place that offered the trailer without the big stupid rear "gate" though. That drops the price by about $140. I might just print out that link you posted and take it into Harbor Freight. They love matching prices on things.

Or maybe I'll buy a pipe-bender and a welder and make my own trailer.

look up the weight of that one you have pictured, pretty heavy duty, of course you could always remove the stock axle/wheels/tires and replace with a 2000 / 2500 lb one with 15 inch wheels.

Good point. After looking it up, I found it's a 1 1/2 ton trailer for ammo that weighs 2800 lbs EMPTY! Whew! I think I'll make a trip down there anyway, but I don't think I'll be hauling that big momma home.

I've been looking at M416 and M100 trailers myself. Seems as though the going rate for a good M416 is around $700. The 1/4 ton trailers are perfect for pulling behind a Jeep. Well, I guess thats what they were designed for. The M416 weighs around 500# empty, so you won't even really notice it's back there when you're pulling it. Most of the ones I've found don't come with a title. Not sure what your state requires, but in PA a utility trailer like that has to have a title.

I would love one of this trailers. I’ve seen an M416 or something very similar to one that had what seemed like a fiberglass “topper” on it, it looked very nice. I can’t find the web site now.

This one here is nice and the upper walls seem to be easily removable, but again the weight.

I'm checking into titling options on the trailer. We definitely need one here in VA, but I'm trying to find out if a salvage title, or home-built title, is an option.

That's an M101 trailer Maximum Carnage. It's not my first pick, but it's a possibility (unless I find out it has a tremendous pre-loaded TW or something). But I think I might have found the site you were looking for.

those are pretty darn heavy as well, end up with a trailer that weighs 1500 plus with nothing in it. Check out the 1/4 ton Canadian there are some out there that have never been used, prices though are about 8/900 sometimes you can get cheaper with buying 3 or 4

In PA you can get a "home built title", but you have to provide receipts of parts to show you built the trailer. Not sure what VA is like, but you could always have the guy you buy the trailer off of give you a receipt. Then find a buddy with an auto parts store to write you out some receipts for the other parts you "buy"

Oh, I LOVE the Adventure Trailers ATXKJ! But, even if I had $4000 or more, it still wouldn't fit my current needs perfectly. I need a cargo trailer that could, on very rare occasion, be towed off-road. Technically, the "off-road" part isn't even a requirement...it would just be cool. 8)

But, if I had a storage barn for the perfect off-road trip camper...and the finances to get it, I'd definitely have an Adventure Trailer.

I'm still waiting for feedback from the state re:home-built titles Stick. Thanks for the info from PA, that gives me hope. I'll let everyone know when I find out. Seems like they'd have to do something like that. They sell individual trailer parts at Northern Tool...seems like you'd have to be able to title/tag is somehow!!
