Post subject:  Help with Rear Parking Brake

I have and 04 with 4 wheel disc brakes on which I am doing a brake job on. I finally got off the rear rotor after much kicking and pounding only to discover one of the parking brake shoes lost its pad.

Anyone who has replaced the parking brake shoes, is it really required to remove the rear axle? I would really love to avoid that as I just replaced the rear differential fluid under 3k miles ago.

Thanks

My '03 FSM says you have to remove the caliper and the rotor, but it doesn't say anything about removing the axle. Everything should be accessible once you have the rotor off. Here's a diagram from the FSM:

Looks like a pretty standard drum brake assembly, so service should be straight forward. Good luck with it!

To bad that pic doesn't show the axle, with the axle in place it's about the same diameter as the parking brake shoes.Might be a little tight trying to mess with the springs but it might also make it easier also.

Ahhh, now I understand the question. I haven't had my rear rotors off so I was unaware that the axle end covered that much of the area where the brake shoes mount.

I was going to ask this question under another thread but now I wonder if I lost a brake shoe too! My parking brake feels weak. If I am on a slight hill (less that 2 or 3 degrees maybe) and put the car in N with the parking brake set it will sometimes roll. Nothing fast at all, you probably wouldn’t notice unless you were looking for it. I only tried this after I was parking on a hill and put the car in park, then set the E-brake and then took my foot of the brake. The car always rolled back until the transmission “P” engaged.

Does the parking brake have a cable adjustment that I need to tighten or do I need to be worried about a lost brake shoe? If so should I not set the parking brake until I’ve had it fixed? Do I need to worry about my regular breaks (which are fine right now?)

Thanks for any help!

1. Do NOT have to remove the axle. My Strauss store has changed my rear brakes a few times and changing the parking brakes just takes a couple more minutes.
2. Parking brakes on KJs SUCK!!! I've had my parking brake pads changed, rotors sanded inside (finally changed out), brakes adjusted till they grab then just backed off a bit, etc. After a short period of time they begin to not hold again. Lots of people have complained about this. Best thing to do is find a place that gives lifetime warranty on brakes. Then when the start to not hold again bring em back!

I finally gave up. I park on a hill and find that if a put the e brake on and then just tap the gas in REVERSE for a second, it seems to lock the E-brake in place.

I hit 100K on my 03 KJ sport and never changed the rear breaks. Only replaced the front pads ONCE. I might have to do them all this time real soon. My E-break, I used it a few times and it is at the point that it is a wast of time to pull the handle up. LOL

It is AMAZING only changed my front pads once because I drive in NJ where the driving is not so easy. one foot on the gas, the other on stand by for quick breaking and left hand on the OH CRAPP BAR!

LOL

Ok the rain finally let up so I could finish the brake job. It was a lot easier than expected, and I did not have to remove the axle (thank god).

I'll repeat that the design of the parking brake is really dumb though, and the old rotors were a huge pain to get off the old parking brake shoes.

I was just going to chime in to let you know you don't have to remove the rear axle :) I've done the rear parking brake shoes on mine and they were pretty easy.
