Post subject:  Painting plastic trim

I was thinking of painting the plastic trim black, like the Renegade. My dad has a Grand Cherokee and his trim is black and it looks nice. I was thinking of spray painting using Krylon, I think its Fusion for plastic. Or use forever black

http://www.foreverblack.com

This says that it actually dyes the plastic, but I don't know if this will work because the plastic is not originally black.

Here is a good thread to read.

What ever you do, sand the trim and rough it up first, get wax and silicone off, and use denatured alcohol or some other prep to make sure it is clean before painting or it will come right off.

Thats a good link, thanks. Now I have to figure out how to get off the fender flares and bumpers. By the way I like your grille with the bedliner, did you do it a similair way. Just sand prime and paint? I'd rather do bedliner than black paint. Where did you get it?

i wish i had taken a picture of my front bumper before i repainted it this weekend. I originally used krylon on all the plastic trim. The flares held up ok; just have to be careful when pumping gas because a little spill could take off the paint pretty quickly. The front bumper was all chipped up from rocks and other debris. Here's a pic (and another) taken a few weeks after the original paint work; might give you an idea what it would look like finished. I know i've also posted in a few threads about painting the flares, they would probably come up in a search.

For the time and trouble, you might be better off looking into the non-plastic flares. There are a lot more options for the 02-04's. Front bumpers seem to be more readily available, and jparts has primed renegade flares.

If I'm going to have to remove the flares to replace them with Renegade flares, I might as well just paint them. Its just I don't like the grey color of the flares. I think that the renegade flares are a little darker. I like the grill that WoodysKJ did with the bedliner. I might go this route just because I think if I don't put a clear coat on, I'm asking for trouble, and I don't want a shiny bumper and flares.

If you use a GOOD and by that I mean EXPENSIVE Poly based paint that has alot of flex to it, and prepare the flares the right way (sanding a rough surface, using a strong cleaner to remove ALL dirt and dust, apply at the proper humidity and all that crap) The flares should last a long time or untill some grocery getter hits you in the mall parkinglot

I used Krylon Fusion to paint my plastic fender flares and door trim on my XJ. It has held up well to 3-4 years of PA weather. I only put one coat on and it should have received 2, but other than that it works well. The only thing you need to do to prep it is to wash it with something like Windex, which is an ammonia based product.

We also used Krylon Fusion to paint my dad's fiberglass hardtop, fiberglass doors, and plastic fender flares on his CJ5. We did it last year and it still looks great.

But what do you think about using the Herculiner on the flares and bumper?

Now that I've seen some pics of cars with Herculiner on the fender flares and bumper, I decided that I really don't want it. I decided to go with an adhesion promoter(primer) and then a basecoat/clearcoat, to make it look like a Limited.

I need advice on the type of paint to use. There's acrylic, latex, laquer, etc. Which is the best. I have an air compressor with some paint guns, but that paint is really expensive. But someone told me that if I don't use the right paint it will look like doodoo in a few months. How long would spray paint last before it starts to look bad? will it look bad after a while?
