Hey guys. I was under the hood today doing some stuff and I noticed that that the driver side rack and pinion mount bushing is coming apart. By "coming apart" I mean the rubber has fragmented and is like, peeling away. The passenger side is normal.

Any idea how common this is and how quickly I should look into replacing it? I notice NO adverse driving effects or noises. Steering is normal. The bolt is tight and there is no play in the mount or rack and pinion itself. This must have just occurred within the last month. I've never heard of anyone having this occur. I found the replacement part here...

Not so bad, right? How big of a job is it? Can I just unbolt it and change the bushing or is there a major removal process involved?

Thanks!

I don't know how to fix your bushings but you might be able to search the forum for the post where somebody gave a web address for the location of the service manual. Once you find that you should be able to find how to do it in the service manual. Sorry couldn't be more help.

I have the same problem, was told have to pull the rack to get those bad boys replaced. I have also heard doing a power steering rack in a kj is not fun.

I wouldn't worry about it to much, there is alot of rubber in that bushing(lengthwise),the top end of the bushing has about 1/4" of extra material that will after time tear off.I had the same thing happen to mine, got the new bushings and tried to replace, nope not happening. The bushing go in upside down to how you think they go and they are in that rack good and I was not going to remove the rack(a whole day job),that was 20,000 miles ago and no problems still so I just don't worry untill major slop is felt(like it matters for me anyway in about 2-3 months). There is just no room to replace them with the rack in the KJ and a dealer or independent shop will charge a arm and a leg to replace those suckers.Don't worry your rack will not fall out,the washers on the bolts won't allow it.I wouldn't worry about untill you feal slop.

OK, thanks tjkj2002. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this issue. Thanks for the advice.
