| Post subject: | Quick O2 sensor help |
My renegade is throwing a p0038 code. Reader says Bank 1 Sensor 2. My understanding is that this is an upstream senor but is bank 1 Driver or Passenger side. I need to get this thing in as my gas mileage is draining the wallet. Any help much appreciated. |

Bank 1 is always the side the #1 cylinder on a V style engine, in the case of the Chrysler 3.7L V6 it’s the left side. The #1 cylinder is not always on the left side, it depends on the manufacturer. Downstream for an exhaust component like an oxygen sensor means furthest from the engine, for an intake component it’s the opposite. |

Downstream O2 sensor will have no affect on your gas mileage or driveability. It's just there to monitor the performance of the catalytic converter. |

The downstrean O2 sensors do have a effect on mpg's,yes they do monitor the cat's but if a cat is not doing it's job it will adjust to get the emissions as close to specs as possible. And if a downstream O2 sensor is not working then the PCM will convert to it's preprogramed settings(open loop) because it can't monitor the cat's,just like if it was a upstream O2 sensor, thus bad mpg's.It's not hurting anything just making the engine run rich.

The #1 cylinder is on the right side, always use R/L side when looking at the engine from the front of the engine, not while sitting in it.It's seema backwards but helps mech's alot,so the right side of the engine is the driver's side, and the left side is the passenger side.Oh and about 99% of all vehicles the #1 cylinder is always on the drivers side, some foriegn cars are all backwards(like there positive ground electrical systems).

After the original reply I did replace the driver side downstream sensor. I reset the computer and the light came back within a couple of miles. I put the sensor I removed into the passenger side and light has remained off. My MPG's appear to have returned. The passenger side was a bear to change because the original had been crossthreaded in from the factory. Thanks for the help. |

Or to make it even easier, just say driver side or passenger side |
