Post subject:  Check Engine Light

I saw a post reguarding the check engine light and how to reset it. The post said something about sometimes it comes on even with minor conditions and if i reset it it may not come back on. Can someone tell me if this is possible? Also is there a poor boy way to read these codes?

autzone will read them for free (and will clear them although they aren't suppose to).

But if it just triggered because of a once fault, like say gas cap not on all the way, after a while it will clear up itself, maybe 5-6 trips.

You better get it check incase it is something that needs attention.

As long as it does not flash on/off it's consider "safe" to drive on.

I am getting the code for Evac small leak and have reset the system with a scanner. worked for about 2 weeks and the code came back. Now it clears and comes back sporadically. I checked the whole system underneath and near the battery and can't find any leaks. Is it possible the filler cap is no good?

Hold in your trip meter button, and turn key on-off-on-off-on . you wil get a countdown then a code on the display. check this threadhttp://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=1714

sounds like i am getting something simular. P0442 Evaporative emission Control System leak Detected (small leak) Called the dealer and they told me that i need to check the hoses on the Purge sylonid pump. They said there is one by the fuel tank and one by the battery on the firewall. One of those hoses is cracked and causing the light. guess i will have to check this on the weekend, They said they see it all the time. Will keep you guys informed.

So now in the past two weeks I have checked the purge pump, the charcoal filter box and all hoses. I even check the solenoid near the battery. No leaks. So I went to the local autoparts store and bought for about 13 dollars a gas cap. After two cycles (engine cold starts) the light went off. the new cap goes on tight to click. My original must have worn over time. Clicks very easily. Oh, make sure you get a cap made for your vehicle. Not on of the ones on the impulse rack.

I figured this out after I filled the tank for the first time in over a month and the light shut off. Pressure didn't need to be sensed in the tank because the gas took up the space causing the light to go out. "system ok" As soon as I got to almost half a tank the light came back on. Pressure unable to build.

So I recommend saving some of your hard earned money and skipping the dealer if it is only a gas cap. Do check all the above listed items.

Good luck to all. This seems to be a common problem

I am having the same problem. When you got the new gas cap it fixed this problem right?
