| Post subject: | Towing wiring |
Hello. I have tried to find the answer but I can't. I have an '03 liberty. Just recently, I was towing my boat and the rear turn signal stopped working. I took it to the mechanic and he hooked up his battery and the trailer worked perfectly so it's a problem with my Jeep. I took a voltmeter and there is no power going to the green wire (right turn signal). I took the right side apart where the 12v power connector is (rear) and I don't have the tow relays so I assume I don't have the tow package. Then I took the left side apart and I have a UHAUL 3 to 2 wire converter. I assume that's my towing wiring. What's it hooked up to and how do I replace it. I know my trailer is ok so it must be the jeep. Any ideas? thanks for all the help. Great site |

Have you looked at the fues panel inside the Jeep? I'd check there for a burned out fuse.. The next question will be figuring out why you popped the fuse. 1) Bad grounding on the trailer caused a back flow of electricity 2) The converter plug you have is not wired correctly (only a case if this is the first time you used this trailer) 3) If you dunked the trailer to retreive or launch the boat, there is a chance that water could have splashed on a open connection of your wiring and shorted the fuse |

The Uhaul wiring harnesses have had a known grounding problem...at least amongst people I know including a former Uhaul service manager. Look closly at the harness....check the fuses like sleeve mentioned and then maybe get a new harness. How is the harness "wired in"? Is it spliced in to the brake light or is it a t connector? Might be a loose connection if it is a splice. |

Thanks for the reply. I know that I did dunk the trailer while still hooked up to the JEEP. Stupid me. Was in a rush. I checked the fuses. I think there are two of them in the Jeep and they are in tact. I don't know what the converter is spliced into but it's on the driver's side by the brake light but I have not opened it yet. It's strange because all else works except for the right hand turn signal on the trailer. If I need to get a replacement 3-to-2 converter, which one should I get? Thanks for all the help. |

So just to recap.. You dunked the trailer with the wireharness still pluged in Didn't blow any fuses Now Trailer unhooked / no wireharness connection No Right turn Signal on the Jeep No blown fuses Does the front (of the Jeep) turn signal blink or is the whole side dead? If the front still blinks than check for a burned out bulb in the rear taillight assembly. If the front is dead also, I still say a blown fuse. Also - verify that your brake lights still function. I dunked once with the harness plugged in and fried the running light fuse. I only had one brake light after that (long ride home!) Worst Case scenario is take the Jeep to an RV dealership for some expert & on the spot troubleshooting. |

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally found it. I had to take the whole rear trunk apart just to find out that the cheap piece of crap from UHAUL is wired into my left turn signal with a crappy wire running within the bumper to the right signal. Took those of too and it turns out that my right blinker was spliced in by a 2 year old. I respliced it and it works perfectly. 3 hour troubleshooting for a 5 minute fix LOL...... Now at least I know my jeep more intimately. hehehe. Now I have to redo my trailer as it's corroding. It never stops. Thanks for all the help. And it's weird, come to think of it, that I did not blow any fuses...hmmmm |

Not blowing fuses is actually kind of common in situations like these... Since it takes a short or bad ground to producte the correct amprage to melt the wire. Instead you just had leaking voltage... What ever you do, don't google "Uhaul Wireharness Melted" |

Hehe.. Great...it'll take all my strength to resist. I just can't believe how cheap the labor can be. If you do it once, then do it right or don't do it at all. |

Yeah, it is amazing how many people go the short and easy route...then wonder why they have trouble. At least know you have it fixed the right way. |

I had A simlar problem. The light in the shifter was not working. Took the console apart to chase the bulb and still no good. Then I saw that no lights on the right of my KJ were working. I checked the fuses with a test light all were good. So I spent a day trying to find the problem. At last I brought it to a friend that has a shop. He tested the fuses. And sure enough I tested the wrong side of the fuse with the light he just tested the left side all it was was a bad fuse. But I go to know the KJ better. |
