| Post subject: | Rustys shocks, rear thud |
I have a thud in the rear when I hit a bump that seems to be from to stiff shocks. Have had it ever since I put on the rustys lift with rustys shocks. Any body else have this problem? I was thinking of replacing them with some rancho rsx's. Any thoughts? Thanks Chris |

I would think this issue would be addressed since the new shocks were supplied with the kit... but you never know... If you lift it, you are losing that much "upwards" travel on the shock. before I put on my ProComp's (which are 3" longer than stock) I would always top out my shocks when driving off curbs, offroading, or even just the right bump with enough rebound. Again, hopefully they would send longer shocks with a lift but... there is my two cents. |

Now on to the quote your OE shocks were bottoming out and the longer ones dont? That sounds very very wrong shocks should ONLY limit down travle up travle should be stoped by the bump stops longer shocks = longer bump stops Bad shocks can make noise going over bumps useing shocks as bump stops can cause them to become bad if your shocks are 3" longer than stock then you need at least 2.5" more bump stop or they will be bad soon |

Hm, maybe I wrote that wrong. If you lift your vehicle and don't change the shocks you are losing that much "upward" or extension out of them. If your shocks are say 30" fully extended, and installed on stock vehicle they sit at say 20" compressed, so with a 3" lift they will sit at 23". So, you lose the 3". Now if you drive off a curb or rock that is say 8" tall, you're axle will drop off it and the shock will "top out" because it now only has 7" of upward travel versus the 10" it had before the lift. That said, my stock shocks would top out when driving off a curb or something because of the loss of upward travel. Your shock should be the thing that holds your axle from just hanging when drooped so that the coil spring won't just fall out! |

I added a 1" bump stop, hockey puck, when I lifted my Jeep. The longer shocks can bottom out with just the stock bump stop which is not good for the shocks. |

Ah yes... I see what you are getting at now. Agreed! Longer shock will bottom out... sorry! My fault. Misunderstood what was being said. And yes, very good way to tell if you need longer bumpstops |
