1) how long until I can drive after using RTV on rear diff?? 2) Valvoline synthetic 75-140 says it needs no additive for limited slip diffs. Correct? or add it? Bottle of additive says not for Jeeps with Quadra-tec and some other Jeep coined term... Advice please! Thanks JR |

I used Walmarts brand 75-140 which I've been told is made by Valvoline, also added LSD additive. no issues, but I sure noticed when I allowed Jiffy lube to do the first change. They used Synthetic, but no additive, and I got a lot of popping and strange behavior Don't know about the RTV, I used Permatex "The Good Stuff" and let it sit overnight |

Quadra-Trac is a 4x4 system used in the Grand Cherokees, so you do not need to worry about that. Im not sure if valvoline already has the modifier or not, but I didnt think it did. I guess if it says it does on the bottle then it does. I would wait at least 12 hours. |

I used the "black" RTV which said on the label that it has 0 set-up time (i.e. put it right on there and tighten things down). I suppose it's more viscous than the other types, but I really couldn't tell a difference except for the cray-high temp orange stuff. For what it's worth, I drained and scraped everything with a wirebrush, then cleaned out everything with brake cleaner and let it dry. I then applied the RTV to the cover and slapped it on probably less than 5 minutes after application and tightened everything down hand-tight. I hit it with a torque wrench a few minutes later and put it to 25 lbs., let it sit for one hour dry, then "filled to spill" with a little pump that screws onto the oil bottle . No seepage, no leaks. I drove it around the block a few times with some turns to get the diff doing its thing and checked again. No leaks. After sitting overnight and every day since, I've driven it as normal. First time changing diff oil, but I must have done it right since I still have diffs and it's 300 miles later. Dan |

I used mobil 1 synthetic which also says doesn't require friction modifier. Actually I think it says you "may not need friction modifier". After a while I noticed a shudder when accelerating while turning a corner. So I'm going to add about a 1/4 dose in this weekend. I did a little research and a lot of the chrysler guys still had to add a little friction modifier after using the Mobil 1 fluid. You want to use the least friction modifier necessary. Adding too much will basically make your diff behave like an open diff. So if the fluid you used said it already has some friction modifier start with that. If you get any bad behaviour (shuddering, chirping, moaning) add a little bit at a time until it goes away. |
