Post subject:  Foglights with higheam on?

After an exhaustive search I can't find any workaround for the fog lights. How can I get them to come on with the high beams on? I would imagine that there is a relay that cuts power to the fog lights when the high beams are on. Could I pull a plug to deactivate it?

Will someone please either make this a sticky or post it in the fabrication section? (uh, if it's not already)

its set that way for a reason. Fogs should only be used for the fog and high beams should never be used in the fog. They try to discourage people from using both by making sure the fogs wont go on if you use the highbeams. Though i think they should make it so that it cuts power from using the highbeams if your using the fog lights.

it's set that way because it's against DOT regulations for fogs and high beams to be on at the same time. fog lights are not for fog only :? i did that write up because i need more light on my way home from work at 12am. i've been running the set up since i did the mod with no problems.

Maybe I am incorrect about this, but fogs throw a wide pattern that only extends a short distance, correct? And high beams are obviously longer and sit out more outfront. Would not both of these come in handy while off road? The short wide beam pattern to see the obstacles and lines right in front of you, as well as a spotter, and the high beams to see way out.

I just bought the light bar as the high beams do not throw much further than the low beams anyway. Those go way out, but are somewhat narrower than I imagined they would be. I can run them with the high beams at the same time, however-- or with the low beams and the fogs.

It DOES make it better running both. if I hold in the lever instead of releasing it I can get high and low beam at the same time. It is great! But you just can't go around driving like that. If I remember right the fogs stay on also.

Aside from shortening the life of the fogs, which is proprably not a big deal, they are set like that from the factory for a safety reason.

I too like the fogs as they do fill in the imediate front field of view. However fogs are meant to be used in FOG or snow or mist. as they do exactly what I mentioned. They fill in low, under the layer of fog there by allowing you to see farther. High beams just bounce off the water drops or ice crystals in the air and refelct right back at you. Like driving with a bed sheet over the windshield in many cases. And that can be pretty dangerous.

I have the OEM fogs in my ARB relocated (Or will have them back as soon as I get a bracket from ARB). also on the arb I have a set of KC 100 watt fogs, aimed down like the oem fogs. really lights up the road.

I have prepared for a Gecko rack from Rock Lizard and I am mounting a pair of 150watt long range lights from KC and a pair of 130 watt driving lights from KC. Combination of all gives me a bunch of up front light, WAY down the road light and the wider spread of the 130's fill in in between. Can't wait to get it all together.

By the way, NONE of the KC's are legal for highway use. But I do it anyway, in my meighborhood and on the express way during deer season late at night with no one around. Saved my butt, on my XJ with a similar set up, a while back when a buck wanted the road more than I did.

Thank you MyJeepWalks for that writeup. The so-called fog lights on the KJ are a joke, they should more appropriately be called driving lights because true fog lights are yellow. While it is true that non reflective objects are more visible in the fog with low beams on, I don't care about non reflective objects. I want to be able to see the taillight and trailer reflectors on other vehicles, thus I use high beams in the fog which extends the range of vision.

maybe if the high beams were brighter as mentioned in another thread then this thread would be moot. 8)

What does fog, snow and mist have anything to do with keeping the fog lights on with the high beams? I think some of you guys misunderstood this mod. With this mod you can still turn the fogs on or off independantly with the parking lights, low beams or high beams. The high beams DO NOT have to be on for the fogs to work. If they did i could see where that would cause a problem because yes high beams in thick fog is not the best idea.

For example i can have just my parking lights on, then turn the fogs on or off. Turn the low beams on and still turn my fogs on or off. Turn my high beams on and still turn the fogs on or off all with the factory fog light switch.

I've read articles on the web for modifying the fog lamp wiring on a TJ to allow foglamps with high beams but the Liberty's stock fog lights aim directly to the pavement and wouldn't be of any use with the high beams. Adding a set of driving lamps would be a better idea.

Myself I like to use my trail lamps instead of my high beams but that leads to a whole other discussion of the legality of trail lamps on the highway.

the fog lites do have adjustment aiming screws, located behind the grill

That is pretty much the whole point to light up directly in front of the vehicle because the high beams shine past that. Yes driving lamps are brighter wont argue with you there. I gots some hella 500's that burn a nice hole in the darkness. On a trail or a road with no other cars. I'll run my fogs, high beams and hellas.

WoW, I bet they see you coming from the space shuttle.

Actually I have my trail lamps pointed towards the ditch. That's where the moose/deer/ATV's come out of.
