| Post subject: | 17 to 16 inch rims? |
I know this probrably belongs in the Tire forum but... If i go to 16" rims (Black Soft 8's maybe) from my stock 17 inchers, what kind of issues with the PCM, BCM, Speedo or what ever might i encounter. I am seeing where my tire options for 16 inchers are light years ahead of the 17 inchers. About to do an OME lift and starting to look at my rubber possibilities. |

The speedo won't be effected by the size of your rim, only the size of the tire you put on the rim. Do you have a the tire-pressure gauges? |

I went through the same dilemma. My stock tires/rims were the Goodyear HP in 235/65/17 with the chrome plated rims. I liked the rims but not the 17" size. I wanted to run BFG A/T's as I have run 3 sets of them on different vehicles before and really like them.. I also didn't want to lose my TPM system. I also was not going to lift it. Try to find a good A/T in that size..........very hard. You can get pavement tires though. Not what I wanted. I wanted an A/T. So I would have needed an alloy wheel (so the tpm's would work) in 16" and buy 5 rims and 5 tpm's and 5 tires as I would have to change the spare also and then just keep the OEM tires and rims as is so I could swap them out from time to time. Yea right....somehow I knew I would probably never put them back on once I got good tires....... I also was not sure of the speedo change (pcm/bcm)and I studied tire sizes and speedo difference figures and prices until I was cross-eyed. But I was also running short on cash and didn't want to run up that big of a charge. I just wanted to pay for them and be done with it. So I finally gave up on switching rim sizes but I had to get the goodyears off asap as I had 15,000 miles of hating them and couldn't stand it any longer. They should have a BIG sticker on them "DO NOT GET WET" I found Hercules Terra Trac A/T's in 235/65/17 and thought I could live with them so I took a chance and got 4 and had them put on. They were good in the snow and mild to moderate off road and were pretty quiet on the road. Had them in the mud once and they were light years ahead of the OEM's which just clogged up and I had to get winched out and laughed at. They are not as good as the BFG A/T/s off road but so far so good. I've got 15,000 miles on them now so we'll see how they wear. So far - so good. So now I still got the POS Goodyear spare still on the back but it's all covered up so no one can see it. It bothers me and I will change it and leave the A/T on there uncovered. Sorry for the long post but that's what happened with me. |

Sorry I got carried away in the above post. But if you are going to lift it and don't care about the TPM's and like the soft 8's (I think they are awsome also) get them in 16" and you will be able to get any tire you want. And they will look good with any tire mounted blackwall out. |

Like Albert said. I'd go with 16's there are more tire size options. |

OKAY, I think I am begining to see the depth of my delema. I do have TPM's, So what does that mean if I switch rims, Steels mess with the signals? or what? Thanks for the input Albert. I too am not looking to drop a huge wad of cash. |

I was trying NOT to empty EVERY pocket....haha.....you know how that goes..... As far as I know steel rims will mess with the sensors - alloy won't. I read that somewhere in my info searching. But if this is not correct I hope someone chimes in. Dynamite tire choices in 16" rim size though if you are going to do a lift. |

The older TPM (04 and before) sensors won't work in steel rims as you can't use the magnet to train them. The ones from 05 and up are self-training so they should work but, at $75 for each of them, I opted to just ignore the yellow tire symbol on my dash. It beeped at me 15 miles after the Soft 8's were mounted but hasn't done it since. Just the light on the dash stays on while running. As for the speedo, I doubt it would be very far off, considering you won't be going with too much bigger of a tire (guessing not, anyway). |

If you go up to 31s (or 245/75/16 which is close) then the speedo will be off approx. 5mph in the slow direction. In other words, speedo says 70, youre actually going 75. so ya gotta watch it. as stated before, if you just change the wheels from 17 to 16 or alloy to steel or whatever, it doesnt matter. only the tire dia. matters. although steel wheels will slightly damage your mpg due to weight. as for PCM, BCM, whatever. i have no idea. i havent had any trouble or change with anything except speedo and mpg. |

Cool, I had heard something about the TPM's but was a little confused. My local tire store charges 10.00 each to "Re-Pack them with new rubber gaskets. But since these only have 8,600 miles on them i am not sure what they will want . IF i change them to new wheels then I will probrably go ahead and have them re-sealed. This is an 07 by the way. Any more comments would be great. Thanks for all. |

As long as you're using a factory steel wheel, your TPMS sensors will work, IE my 02 Sport wheels. Aftermarket wheels are usually designed slightly different, and car manufacturer wheels differ from wheel to wheel on the bead. while the sensor will FIT, it'll stick out at an awkward angle and while mounting your new rubber on a custom wheel, there's a chance of breaking the TPMS sensor, and your tire shop will NOT eat that. If you stick with a Chrysler wheel, you'll be fine as froghair. SWMPTHNG has a set of '03 Rennie wheels for sale, btw. |
