Post subject:  Breaking in of Engine

Hey all,
I'm getting my LOADED KK on Friday, and it's right as I head out on a 1000 mile trip for a wedding. I am concerned about taking it on highways, as it will have about 10 miles on it when I pick it up. Since I don't have access to Jeep manuals on the subject, what is the break-in period and recommendations for the KKs? Speed variance? Speed limits? RPM limits? Things I need to check? Thanks.

Just drive it. Vary the MPH every so often and enjoy the new Truck

You should get lots of opinions on this one.

Personally I think the worst thing you can do is to drive a brand new car down the highway droning along at 70 MPH for hours at the same RPM.

When I used to race karts, my engine builder was the lead engineer who designed the V10 in the viper. He had a dyno at his house and built kart engines on the side. Actually he would have argued that he designed viper engines on the side as he loved building the kart engines :)

Anyway, his theory was this...

Heat cycles are good. So lots of short trips during the break-in are preferable.

High revs are bad (especially with low load). But don't take that to mean baby it. You want to progressive add manifold pressure (high load at low and moderate RPM). So in a manual trans vehicle, you might start doing half throttle accelerations from 2,500 - 3,500 rpm in 5th or 6th gear. Then after maybe 50 miles, start doing full throttle accellerations from 2,500 - 3,500 RPM in 5th or 6th gear. Give the engine 5 minutes of normal driving between "pulls" to give it time to cool.

Those high load, low RPM pulls create high cylinder pressures which help the rings seat.

My owners manual for my 07 said the keep it under 50 or 55 mph for the first 500 miles. May be BS but why not.

Stop often, check oil every time you fill up keep your speed down. Like I said It may be Bull Sh*& but if it helps prolong the engine and fewer head aches, WHY NOT!!!

Doing those things anyway will get you under the hood often and help you spot issues BEFORE the become serious, at any age of the KJ or KK.

Just a good habit to get into. Beside the KK is a maching made by humans and they do screw things up now and then in the process of putting them together.

He'll put 500 miles on it in two weekends for sure (it being new and all).. Then he can go on his trip.

Over the years I have bought 17 new vehicles, and even 3 new Harleys, broke them in all the same way, varied the rpms but ran them like I was going to run them all the time for the rest of their life! ....hard! Have also had 9 or 10 that were rebuilt and placed in older vehicles.I have even bought 2 of them and within 250 to 500 miles had a trailer hooked to them and moving. Oil changes are important, changing them all within the first 1000 and then next one 2000 and then regular times after that.
Oh and those above all went over 200,000/250,000 and no problems, one Harley (86 FXRT) had 95,000 before I ever tore into it but that was just for more power!!!
So vary the RPMs and run it
and thats the way I do it! I was a certified mechanic so I am not a total idiot     in my thinking
