I noticed some wet oil that surrounds the entrance to the drive shaft, soaks down, and it coats the bottom of the differential. How big of an issue is this? I wouldn't be terribly worried, but I've used the 4 hi and 4 lo recently and don't want major mechanical issues......I think maybe a seal is messed up, or is this to be expected if the 4 wheel drive hasn't been used in a long time? btw I have Mobil 1 75w140 gear oil up front |

Sounds like your pinon seal is on the way out. I know a couple on here have done the replacement themselves so you'll probably get some info from them on what needs to be done. |

Yea, probably a bad pinion seal. Mine has been leaking for a few months now. Just make sure the oil level is ok in the diff till you can get it fixed. |

I would clean it up and keep an eye on it Dana axles tend to get "wet" My 44 and 30 on the TJ are "wet" and I push the crap out of them When it comes to leaks "They are not that bad if they dont leave a good spot over night" |

I think I am going to soap and water it, clean it up good, leave it in the garage overnight with some cardboard and see what I see. If I do need to replace it, how much at the dealer to get it done? I have no idea how I would replace that.... |

If its not drip leaking and just kinda oozing out, just check the level every 4-5months and keep driving the vehicle. |

sounds good thanks, Ill check the level today (Im doing my own 60 k service, I refuse to pay $500 to do what I can do myself........ (on a completely unrelated note) I can't help but think that dealers of american cars charge such outrageous fees for service in order to make up some cash from the lack of sales due to foreign competition. Profit margins are high at Audi (my other car) because they are such great cars and are doing well, that their service is dirt cheap. At the Nashville dealer, I get my car washed and cleaned, inside and out, get a rental with free gas all day, and get a gift certificate to Best Buy from the dealer, and did the full 60k service, all for $160...... and Jeep does none of that and wants $500?!? |

Really? I have the complete opposite experience. In fact I have just as much paid in abnormal repairs for VAG products than I have invested in my CRD including purchase price. |

Honda service is cheap too....My wife's Acura costs us nothing for non-warranted service and I hear the same for Honda's. Audi is the worlds fastest growing luxury brand, and can barely keep cars on the lot (at least in Nashville.) |
