Post subject:  Removing Window Tint

Anybody have any experience removing window tint, particularly from the front window? I picked up my 06 CRD about a month ago. The previous owner had tinted the windows including a light tint on the front. Neither the dealer or I noticed it but when I went to pick it up there was a rip in the front tint where a dealer employee had attempted to remove a sticker which had been placed inside the window. The dealer is obligated to remove the tint as it is illegal in California but it is not convenient for me to get back there. How hard is it to remove tint from a window? I could pay a local shop to take it off if it is too much effort or something that might mess up my Liberty if done wrong.

I've never had to try it, but I just ran a search on google (for window tint remover) and found a couple of articles on removing tint. They talk about removing the tint on the rear window, but I would imagine the same would apply for the front window too. Here's some links to the articles.

Hope it helps.

get some new razor blades, and some ammonia and go at it, doesnt take too much, mostly just some time and some scraping.

If they're required to do it and they didn't, it sounds like you have some leverage. I'm sure in Cali there are lots of tint shops. Just find a good one close to you and get an estimate. If it's not that much, the dealer might just pick it up to avoid the headache.

I would get the dealer to have the whole windshield replaced. It was their obligation to provide you a window without the tint so why should you go through the hassle of removing it?

I dont think he is talking about the front windshield, I think he means the front windows.

I just removed my old tint 2 weeks ago. The EASIEST and Cleanest way to do it is to use a steamer. I used a bissel and started spraying the steam at one of the corners, once it heated up I used a razor to lift the film, then I just worked my way down the window, heating the tint as I slowly pulled it down the window. It didn't leave any glue behind and no need to use the razor, risking scrathing your windows up. Just be patient and allow the glue to heat up, took me about 7-10 minutes per front window.

Get some windex and fresh razor blades. I did mine this summer right before inspection was due. Took about 10min per window. Took it for inspection, passed, then next day got them retinted.
