| Post subject: | Question about transmission (I Think) |
I recently bought a 2006 4x4 KJ, with automatic trans and I cannot for the life of me figure out something. There is a small on/off button in front of the Four wheel drive lever, in the center console, what is this used for? I always keep it in off, but I dont know if its for the Full Time 4 wheel drive, or am I way off base? I hope that makes sense, I really dont know how to describe it. |

Are you talking about the overdrive lockout switch? Try hitting it while cruising about 55 on the highway. It should downshift you and leave the top gear inaccessible. Good for towing, etc. |

Didn't you get the owners manual? Look in the glove box...up high in it, there is a small cubby hole. Could be the ESP button? |

Yours must be the only one with a button in that location. I know I've never seen one there. What happens if you push it? |

The button on the center console - is the child safety lock - stops the rear windows from working from the door switches. Although I would not consider it 'in front of the Four wheel drive lever' |

it's for the ejection seat but only if you have the escape hatch in the roof. |

Like ATXKJ said, its the child lock out for the rear windows. It looks just like the picture in my 06 KJ, I thought all the KJs have this switch. |

Did you get it used? Maybe someone put a locker in and that's the switch for it? A pic would be nice if you can post one. |

![]() It is one the other side of the center console directly in front of the 4 wheel drive shifter. I messed around with it on the way to work last night and when I switch it to ON it cuts out the AM radio, and the FM is total static. I will try to see if it locks the rear window tonight. And to the person who told me to read the manual, I did multiple times. Thanks for the help everyone Ill go out and try to get a picture with my cell phone, sadly I dont have a digital camera. |

K here are the pics, sorry about the quality. It also is not the ESP button. Could it be for the DVD pop down in the back seat?

I take you aren't the original owner. thats an aftermarket switch that goes to who knows what, i'd start popping parts off from the center console to find out what it goes to. |

I know exatcly what that is now! It's an inline FM modulator. You know some of the FM modulators will broadcast your Ipod (etc) over a frequency that you choose that is not in use by any local stations. This one plugs directly into the antenna port in the back of your radio, your antenna then plugs into the modulator. When the switch is flipped, it kills your antenna, allowing for your radio to only pick up the frequency broadcasted by the modulator. Giving you a better quality, and more reliable sound than a standard FM modulator. You should be looking for a 3.5 mm stereo cable... I have some pics of mine I'll try to post up. |

You should be looking for a 3.5 mm stereo cable... I have some pics of mine I'll try to post up. This is a picture of everything tucked behind the dash somewhere.
This is a pic of the power switch.
This is a pic of the Antenna bypass. Notice, the male plug goes to the radio, the female plug accepts the Jeep's antenna.
This is a pic of the RCA inputs into the Modulator. You should have (or will need to get) a 3.5 mm (male) to RCA (male) wire that connects the audio device to this unit.
This is a picture of the power supply and ground. Either it's connected to the fuse block, or directly to the battery (NOTE there is already a fuse located in this unit).
Hope this helps! |
