Anybody ever replaced a side view mirror? Long story short, I have to replace the passenger side view mirror assembly on my 03 KJ. It is a power mirror, but not heated. If anybody has any suggestions/tips/tricks on how to do this and/or do this easily, it would be greatly appreciated. I apologize that I do not have any pics to post, but it is dark now and I have a cheap digital camera. I will try to post a pic tomorrow afternoon. Thanks in advance for any help you folks can give me.

James

Easy if not heated. Trim on the inside of the door comes off. Then it's 3, I believe, small nuts (don't drop em!). Then 1 wire plug when you pull the mirror out. I made the mistake of ordering a non-heated unit for passenger side to replace 1 I broke at Paragon. Couldn't return it but it really doesn't matter in my climate. Driver's one still defrosts fine.

I thought you could replace just the top section of the mirror housing where it pivots but you can't (of course!). Gotta replace the whole assy.

pull off the door panel, then theres 3 bolts that hold it down, feed the wire through.

FYI you can get a cheap non OEM reporduction mirror that fits and looks fine off of ebay or other places that sell aftermarket body parts.

My only comment on the non OEM part is that the mirror glass shakes, while the OEM mirror does not. Somewhat annoying but for the price its fine.

Replaced the passenger side mirror on my '02. Very easy. There is one bolt in the door handle, and another in the armrest bin thingy. There is a bunch of plastic rivets throughout the edges of door panel.

I got a used OEM model on eBay for cheap. Just like Catcher123 said, don't drop the bolts. I dropped one and need to find a replacement. I think its a 8 or 9mm.

Magnetize your socket when you remove the nuts off the mirror. Cacher mentioned it, but if you drop them inbetween the outter and inner sections of the door they will rattle forever and you can't get them out. (Well unless you cut a huge hole in the bottom of the door)

Easy peasy swap as long as you can find a replacement mirror for cheap.

I saw someplace that you should loosely stuff a rag in the gap before you take off the nuts. This way when you inevitably drop one, it won't fall down into the cavity!

You seem overly fascinated with my nuts, I have 3 nuts just like everyone else, what's so fascinating about that?

You guys are fun.

This might help. Earliest I can find some pictures of the mirror is probably Monday am.

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=18113&highlight=mirror

And this was from Boi1ermaker
Quote:
I just replaced the driver's side mirror on my '05. I started by removing the inside door trim. Two phillips head screws to take out, one in the handle, one under a tab in the door latch. On the bottom of the door was a little area where i could get in a straight edge screwdriver to start pulling off the trim. Its held in place by those platic rivet things, the trim will come off without too much constant force. The rivets are reusable if they don't break off on you, i've taken my trim a few times without having broke one. Since I wanted a little more room to work, i detached the trim completly by disconnecting the wires for the door switches and took the trim off an L-shaped hinge type connection.

The mirror itself is held in place by three long bolts and a plastic rivet attached to the mirror. I think the nuts took a deep socket 10mm attachment to my wrench. I couldn't get the mirror off without breaking that plastic rivet. Wasn't too concerned because it looks like my used replacement had the same problem. Remove the nuts, slide the mirror out, slip the the new mirror in and tighten the nuts. Its a little bit tight, if you drop a nut you can remove the door speaker and reach around at the bottom of the door for it. Reverse the steps for trim removal to get it back on and you are done.

Thanks for the info. everybody. The replacement sounds relatively straightforward. Well, maybe I should rephrase that. It should be relatively straightforward for anyone but me, I can screw up the easiest of jobs that take even the most minimal amount of mechanical ability. Right now, I have a line on a mirror from a local recycler that specializes in Chrysler parts for $50. Nobody else has one. So, I will probably pick it up next week. Thanks again everybody.
