| Post subject: | Coolant leaking bottom radiator hose?HELP!! |
Hi, (before i start,I did search for this topic on here didnt find anything sorry if there is) Out of the blue today on a 28 degree day the lib started making this gurgling noise, a few minutes later i had coolant smoke coming out of the engine bay. It was on the belt and pretty much all over the place down the bottom. the 2 top hoses seem fine. The coolant reservoir was near empty hence the gurgling sound. Needless to say I brought her home and parked her and used my other car. Later tonight i went out and get some coolant and filled the tank backup ran her for a while. The temp comes up to normal and stays there, its not over heating at all. and i do have heat plenty of it.Although i did never see any coolant in the overflow part while running. I ran her for a good 1/2 hour then drove to a gas station where i could see better. I noticed some coolant all around the bottom hose on the engine end. The bottom hose feels like it has something in it when i squeeze it unlike the top hose, not sure if that just a reinforcer inside the hose for bursting reasons. one more thing, when i squeeze the top hose it makes the coolant go and down in the reservoir tank (thermostat open)? It's a pretty cold night out as well about 22 degrees now.#1 what is the bottom inlet for ? 2. where is the water-pump located. 3.what do you guys think the issue is. Any comments appreciated before i take her in to my mechanic. I don't feel like being raped right before Christmas (i just found a thread similar to mine maybe its the water pump |

Water Pump IS covered under the powertrain warranty. Could also be a cracked radiator which is NOT covered under the powertrain as odd as it sounds. Coolant should be in the reservoir when the jeep is running. |

Your warranty was up at 70,000 miles. |

I've replaced a radiator in my 02' already..of course I'm the 2nd owner and there was no warranty (to my knowledge) that came with it. The radiators in the older KJs have always been weak...just like the window regulators. Alot of members have replaced both.... I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this was indeed a cracked radiator. Good luck with the fix...it sucks when it has to come out of your own wallet. |

If he bought an extended warranty it would be covered, but otherwise, his is a 2004 like ours with the 7 yr./70,000 mile factory warranty. |

The bottom hose has a big spring in it to keep it from collapsing under suction. You need to figure out where it's leaking from. A water pump is like $50 - $60 and not that hard to change out. Radiator hoses are like $10 and also not hard to change out. In either case you need to drain the radiator. |

Were you losing heat while idling? I had exact same symptoms, smoke from rad, tiny leak on rad, losing coolant, incredible gurgling noise, etc.. Just got my rad replaced, and picked up my jeep today. $750. Don't ask. It looks like many people have had this problem, and either fixed it themselves, or took it to dealership, it looks like Radiator in jeeps aren't meant to last long, and crack or mess up easily, which should have been covered under warranty if you ask me.. but it is not.. Maybe if we all get together, we can push for a recall on this crap? |

Doubtful. it's one thing if you have balljoints go out at less than 20k when the car is still factory fresh and less than a year old, but it's a whole 'nuther ballgame to try to convince ChryCo to replace something after 3 or 4 years of service when your b2b is up. You have to remember that the radiator in almost any car is RIGHT up front and very vulnerable to stuff hitting it, so technically there's no real reason they should HAVE to replace it. you and I know there's a problem, and ChryCo may or may not know that there's a problem, but that doesn't stop the fact that it's just an issue with plastic radiators in general. |

Well, maybe. But it is obvious that they are using cheaper and cheaper materials. We just have to put up with it, and see if we are one of the lucky ones who will go up to 80k without problems. |

Most aftermarket radiators now have a lifetime warranty,I just replaced the radiator for my honda civic which lasted less then 2 years - just took the old one back to advance auto for a new plastic replacement - no charge. |
