Post subject:  hid bulbs?

Does anyone use the hid bulbs for their kj? like the blue ones? i have been in a car with those and they are very bright, see much farther with them. I was wondering if anyone has ever had a set in their kj and what their thoughts are.

Actual HID bulbs require an entire HID system. They cannot just be plugged in to a standard socket. You can get bulbs that are colored to look like HIDs, but they are just colored halogen bulbs. There is another type of bulb called a HIR made by Toshiba. I've read from users, from a BMW board, that they are the bee's knees, but I've not tried them yet.

Never heard of the HIR Bulbs...........At $25 each they better be better...hehe.

I wonder if anyone here has tried them either on a KJ or whatever??? Are they really that much brighter??

One guy on the BMW e32 board I read says they are totally worth it & are as good as HIDs.

Unfortunately, the HIRs are not available in a high/low combo bulb like the 9007s found on the KJ. :? I've found the instructions to modify a HIR bulb for use in a 9007 socket, but you'd give up the high beam. Supposedly, they are a bit brighter than a high beam, but at the lower current draw of 55w. I suppose you could install auxiliary driving lights & use those as high beams, but that would be getting into DOT regulation violation territory

watts is a mesurment of OUTPUT, Not current draw. The draw somewhere around 4.4 AMPS of current. The output or project 55 watts of power.

Low beams are DOT suposed to be 55 watts and high beams are supposed to be DOT 65 watts.

Anything over 65 watts is SUPPOSED TO BE FOR OFF ROAD ONLY. That explains my 100 watt fogs, my 130 watt driving lights and my 150 pencil beam long range retina burners.

Yep, you technically got me there. But since the the formula is watts=volts x amps, amps being the measurement of current, & the system being 12v/14.4v regardless of which bulb you use... well, the 55watt bulb has a lower current draw than the 65 watt bulb  Please excuse my inaccuracy, it was late, I was fatigued.

No Problem. I have those days too.

That does make me wonder, though...

If I converted my factory head lights to low beam only using the HIRs, & installed driving lights on my bumper using 65w HIR bulbs, & wired them up to activate as high beams, would that be legal?

In aviation, you can call the FAA's Flight Standards District Office, & they can help with regulatory questions like this. Is there a similar entity for motoring?

Basicly, anything over 55 watts in oncoming traffic would be grounds for a traffic stop.

That can't be the case. My '94 BMW has separate low beams & high beams. The lows are 9006 bulbs at 55watts, & the highs are 9005 bulbs at 65 watts. Those are OE specs.

FWIW, the BMW lows stay on when the highs are turned on... that is also a stock feature, approved by the DOT. If adding separate high beams are legal, there is a lot of room for improvement on the KJ's lighting.

I'm running A hid kit in mine, A friend of mine sells them. Yes they are vary bright but I haven't gotten stopped yet. They have been in the kj know for about two weeks trying them out, they are pretty mutch plug and play I had to mod the clip that holds the bulb in to fit over the new hid bulb but thats it. the kit sells for $150.00 pluss shipping and comes with A one year warenty.

I found this:http://www.xenonlink.com/product_info.php?products_id=142&osCsid=75d1ccabc8d74793d140e4aedad083e0 Probably similar to what your friend sells. It is a HID system though, not just bulbs. There are ballasts & igniters in addition to the bulbs. I'm sure they are bright, but If you use them outside of a projector assembly, you will be a nuisance to other drivers. Projectors can focus the bright light to where it is useful, but out of the eyes of other drivers; the assembly on the KJ just shines out. You will probably temporarily blind other drivers, causing all sorts of issues. You may be having a chat with Officer Friendly yet!

Yea mine is A full system, there's about ten of us running around PA and NJ with them in different cars and no problems yet but I'm sure it's coming. Its allways something weather it's tint, wheels out of the wells the list can go on and on.

Are they illegal without a projector, or are they still D.O.T approved? It seems like a gray area, but still legal, no?

KJ1008: Are you running a 50w HID system? I want to throw in a 50w HID system @ 4300K. Do I run the risk of melting the assembly? Also, can the headlights be aimed upward more? The highbeams don't shine up/out far enough with the stock assemblies. When I had my Acura CL, and hit the highbeams, it would light up the reflectors on the highway for a good 3/4 of a mile out. No can do that with the Jeep :(

Post subject:  Beam Adjustment

Yes, the KJ lights can be adjust up and down. It's a small star bit if you look with a flashlight through the hole above each headlamp you will see it. I did mine at night with the lights on against my garage door so i had reference points to where the beam was to make them even. Haven't found the latteral adjustment screws though, not sure if there are any!

Hope that helps!

That helps a lot. Or will help a lot

Mind if I PM you to ask about your stereo?

EDITED TO ADD: Helped a ton. Now I just need a 50w HID assembly :D Thanks!

Guys, just keep in mind that even if you do not get pulled over, Super bright lights are bad for other people's night vision. You seriously can cause accidents which you may or may not be involved in. Please think about the situation dynamically & responsibly :?

for sure! Thats why i'm here, to help and get help! , :? and in response to KJpilot, I do agree with you, some people do have their light adjusted so badly, that it appears to be high beams. seeing farther down the road is one thing, but blinding oncoming traffic in pouring down rain just isn't right. :?
