| Post subject: | Rear Bumper Ideas |
So Im getting ready to start my rear bumper now and I was hoping for some ideas for you guys, so far I have a design in mind nothing fancy just a simple and easy design with tow points and a hitch of course and all 1/4" steel oh I almost forgot Im also gonna incorperate some taillight guards, but Im wanting to make a tire carrier on it and I was wanting some ideas on how to do that, kinda like RL's or this one If you have pics that you can post of a close up of one that would help me greatly also lol even a bad paint drawing would help me!
thanks! |

1/4" probably wouldn't be strong enough for a swing-out. You could get away with the majority of the bumper being 1/4 but you'd have to have reinforcement plating to hold the weight of the tire. Don't forget that people will always add hi-lifts and shovels to a tire mount so you have to account for additional weight. As for ways to do it, just start looking at everything on hinges for ideas. Something will come to you. Can't help with pics since I don't have one but, you don't want to be taking other people's designs anyway. |

lol im not wanting to start this crap again im not wanting to steal peoples ideas Im simply want some help on how to do the hinge and askin for any ideas that anyone may have or of something I should add, I think that 1/4" would be thick enough w/o much if any reinforcements but I always reinforce the crap outta everything lol thats why my front bumper can take a deer going 45/50 mph and have nothin wrong w/ it heres what my bumper will look like for the most part and I use my bad paint skills to show my idea for taillight guards, ok I guess I am stealing Jereosbou's idea and design, but he's ok with it b/c he is also helping me out like my front bumper

I have always thought that a ladder to the roof rack (like the Rovers) would cool. Stephen |

On that picture with white KJ are the rear shocks installed upside down? Sorry for the hijack buddy! Oh and I would love to have a simple bumper in the back, nothing fancy so keep up the work and let us see what you come up with. |

Here is a link to a guy who sells parts for DIY bumper projects. The link is specifically for the hinge parts but check his site, he has other stuff like clevis tabs and receiver mounts, etc. http://www.atozfabrication.com/catalog/tirecarrierhingekit-p-34.html |

If you put a swing away tire carrier on the bumper it most likely will not allow you to open the window anyways without swinging the tire out, make the ladder part of the tire carrier, outside of the tire, it would actually be what holds the tire in place, tom |

tom dang, your right Id have to open the tire carrier to open the rear, POO!! I didnt think about that, oh well ok Ill try the ladder on the tire carrier would it be best as a removeable or permament ladder?, If I did it as removable I would be able to open the rear flipper glass |

I would make it so the tire is kind of offset to one side like the one RL is doing and then put the ladder on the other side like the jerry can and handy man mount, that way you have more of an actual ladder, heck make it so you can make a handy man mount to the ladder as well.Just keep in mind it will be heavy and $$$$ ,and time consuming but tear it up the more options people have the better. |

ya I might do that, ya it will be fairly heavy thats why Im getting OME HD's and it shouldnt be expensive I built my front bumper and roof rack for $60, so Im hoping to do my rear pretty cheap as well ya it will take some time, good thing Ill have some awesome help from my friends whos been weldfing longer then Ive been alive |

About the ladder: I was thinking of making the ladder slide up under the roof rack and pin in place, then you can open the window easily. When the ladder is needed, just pull the pins, and pull the ladder out, and make a spot for it to catch on the jerry can mount if you think in regards to rock lizards bumper. stephen |
