This is the first time I'll be replacing a u-joint. How hard is it to do? Got a couple of questions? 1) AutoZone has two sizes listed: "3.622 with outside lockup" and "3.219 with outside lockup". I have a NV231 T-case & a 45RFE Tranny, if that matters. CLICK HERE 2) How would I go about painting my severely rusted driveshaft? Will it have to be re-balanced? 3) Will the fluid leak out of the transfer case after I remove the driveshaft? 4) I need to get a grease gun? Any suggestions? Not looking to spend more than $30 for one? Should I use synthetic or dino grease? Thanks. |

If you want to paint the driveshaft, I just jack up the rear wheels and put the transfer case in neutral and paint and turn it as I go. You will not need to rebalance it afterwards, some fluid may leak out just have a rag ready to wrap around the tailshaft. If you have a Tractor supply close they have some good guns, get one with a rubber flexable hose , and use synthetic grease Hope that helps a wee bit Tom |

mine takes the 1-0153 ones(the smaller ones), i have a flange at the rear axle, i've seen some repair manuals that say straps are on the rear, but i've never seen one that way. Vise, press, hammer, various sizes of sockets, all come in handy when doing U-joints. 2. Wire brush it and repaint, it shouldn't miss up the balance 3. Yes/no, depending on how your car is sitting, but just a little will leak out. 4. You only need a grease gun if you get the u-joints with grease fittings, the 1-0153DL(the cheaper ones) have grease fittings, The 1-0153DG have no grease fittings other things will be any tools you need to put that metal strap back on the rubber boot on the t-case output. |

I heard that they changed the driveshaft in 2003, is that true? Anyone out there with a 2002, changed your u-joint? Also, it's below freezing (about 29-35F) over here, so not sure if the paint will hold. I was thinking of using Rustoleum Hammered paint. |

I was thinking of using Rustoleum Hammered paint. thats why you paint it when its off the car in you house and you can actually measure that difference pretty easily. just go crawl under it and measure the distance across the u-joint its self, and while you are under there, see if you have straps? |

My parents wouldn't like black spray paint on their walls and carpet 1300ZUK wrote: just go crawl under it and measure the distance across the u-joint its self, and while you are under there, see if you have straps?
I was hoping someone could tell me what size, if not, I guess I'll have to measure it myself. Thanks for all your help. |
