Hey guys i have an 04 kj Renegade and i have that plastic bulky roof rack that goes over the bars on the roof and well i was wondering two things actually

1. I have a surfboard and i am forced to tie it straing to the plastic bars that go across but there plastic will they break and if not do they make cross bars that fit inside of that plastic rack.

2. Those two indentations in the back of the roof rack what are they for??? My friend said that he saw a renegade with two fog lights mounted inside of them is this true??? and he said they looked like the factory mopar ones that come mounted on the front of the roof....

The metal bars that are inside the plastic rack can be moves to go across the Jeep. Not sure if that will help or not. The plastic rack is rated at 65 pounds, so putting the surf board on it wouldn't be a problem. I'd use the meetal cross bars to the metal factory bars underneath to tie it down with though. The factor metal movable bars also have those little tie down hooks on them. That should work.

The cross bars on mine came bolted down front to back. Unscrew the wing/knurled nuts and place them back right to left. I forget but I think they may be different lengths as I haven't moved mine in a while. That gives you pretty standard cross bars. They are not adjustable front to rear though. Will only mount in one position.

Figured I would post here instead of a new thread. I have an 04 as well with the plastic. Today I went to make my crossbars out of unistrut like some others on the board have. Wanted to hang mine with U bolts instead of sitting them on top because I figured I could run directly under the two stock side bars without removing the plastic and some sltight trimming and it would let a roof basket sit even lowerfor less wind. Problem is the roof curves just a tad to much to go straight across with the unistrut under the side rails. So I'm back to square one.

Cacher123: I emailed you before, yours looks great and seems to work perfect but I am just concerned that the flat stock going across is only held down by the four relatively small botls(one at each corner). And that plastic is rated at 65lbs(figure the bars themselves could hold a bit more. I see you did replace the stock loopy thingy bolts for four regular ones though. How has that been, do you check it often or retighten them at all. Overall its worked well? Just want ppiece of mind during 75 on the highway ofcourse. :-) Thanks -Ryan

I replaced my standard bolts with allen head bolts with a tapered shoulder so I could countersink them to sut flush. I've had it on for something like 3 years now and nothing has loosened up. Only thing was the paint I used on the crossbar stock sucked even though it said it would prevent rust on bare metal. They lied!

Awesome, whatever I end up using(most likely the flat stock now) I have the ability to have it powdercoated so hopefully that will help with the rust. I am guessing the plastic portion of the rack helps with some of the air deflection rather then having just the basket up there... thats one thing I do like about up to 04 and the basket sits mostly hidden inside the outside plastic pieces. Thanks again, you are always a help.
