so i went to get an oil change and was notified by the mech's that chrysler recommends a diff fluids swap at 80.000 miles. which im a 100 and some change short of reaching. so my question is do i go with whatever the dealership puts in there or should i bring my own fluids in and have them put in something else? what fluids do yall recommened?

It's probably really cold in Illinois; if your lucky enough to have a heated garage then I would do it by myself. It very easy, there should be a how-to in the tech section. You say you haven't changed your gear oils in 100k miles. The manual recommends a oil change every 12k miles. I'm surprised it has exploded or something.

EDIT:

Gear Oil Change How-To

I highly recommend getting a oil pump, makes the job SO MUCH easier. I changed mine without a pump and it was a HUGE PITA!! Spend a few bucks and get a pump. I would recommend a 75w90 or 75w140.

EDIT #2:
Something like this: AMSOIL Hand pump

You can also find it at Wal-mart for cheaper. L.O.S.T Post

Have you done the transmission (and filter) and transfer case? Those should be done about every 30k miles.

they have been switched as recommended through the general keep up that chrysler states in the manual. i always just took the jeep back where io bought it for maintenencehowever it's time to do them again so that is why i was asking. where is a good place to order amsoil from. i remember seeing someone on here that was a distributer. any idea who that was? or a link would be useful. thanks yall.

OM calls for tranny at 60k, tcase at 30k, and the diffs every 15k.

Every 15k for the diffs is alittle crazy. I can understand doing it at 15k the first time(for break in metals), but if you dont offroad or tow alot its a waste from there on out.

Yeah where the heck is that guy when you need him? :?

If you run a good synthetic lube you can get away with extending the drain intervals and not worry about it unless you wheel w/ your diffs under water often. (or spring a leak)

Anyhow, my cost pricing is what I can get you and I would bet it will be as much or cheaper than the dealers lube cost. (which is a big reason All J Products is a retailer of mine. They got tired of paying more for Mopar gear lube than Amsoil Severe Gear cost)

No kidding. 15k is pretty crazy, we are talking more like 60-80k being reasonible.

I'm going 30k on diffs and transfer case. I don't off road and it make it easier to remember when they are due. Next time I need to go AMSoil 8)

Dont cut corners and pump out the old fluid...this is just cheatin your gears IMO...

You need to do it right, just take the whole diff cover off, clean up the RTV, clean up the inside of the diff with brake cleaner, make sure gears/LS/lockers are not all f-ed up, put back on cover...its a piece of mind that just simply drainin and refillin aint gonna fill in your head...my .02 cents 8)

X2 on what he ^ said,it's better to do it right the first time. The front diff does have a drain plug(be sure to take the fill plug out first) so no need to remove the front diff cover, anyways you'd have to remove one of the diff mounts to get it off anyway.

yea it was still red, but a tiny bit low and little on the darker side. the new valvoline ATF+4 full synthetic made a huge difference, its so much quieter now. not saying the full synthetic did it, but just swapping new fluid into it helped a lot

With a pump and some quality synthetic fluids (amsoil, mobil, valvoline, ...), a tube of RTV and a wheel brush on a cordless drill, it still took less than 1 hour to do front and rear.... the first time. I'm sticking with every other oil change (12-15k) for change intervals. It's pretty cheap compared to new parts and you don't even have the jack of the vehicle to do it.

I've gone 30K miles on the rear diff fluid without any problems. I'm not trying to promote this as something that everyone should do, but it's not too much of a big deal when you slip over on the axle changes. I am of the opinion that if the fluid is clean and still smells horrid, there isn't really any need to replace it. When it gets dirtry, or you have water in there, then you get in trouble.
