Post subject:  ABS question and skids...

Yea, I know one has nothing to do with the other but didn't want to start two different post:

1. Lately if I brake hard or slide on a slick surface I get some tire jump in the front. It almost sounds like two gears grinding against each other and I can feel it in my foot. I assume this is from the ABS, is that correct of am I wrong in assuming this? I just want to know if this is something that I can look for or is this have to be taken to the dealer to take care of?

2. The easy one. Will a front factory skid for an 02 fit on an 06? I can't seem to find anything anywhere put jparts only sells one front skid and skid rows front skid will fit an 02-07 so I assume the factory will fit too. Just wanted to be sure first.

Can't help ya with the brakes...
As far as the skid...
I recently put on a front skid that was listed for every year from 2002-2006 on my 2007. Same part and same nuber of bolts. Only difference was in the instructions they show a different bolt placement for 2005-2007 with regards to the craddle mounting location.

The skid should fit. do you have the nutzerts installed already? mine were installed in the factory. some models have them others do not.

My skid part number is #82209026

I'll have to look for the nutzerts I haven't actually crawled under to check yet. I guess I'll find out, I'm sure it should fit.

It should come with all necessary hardware including nutzerts and an install tool. so if you don't have them you should get them with the kit.

The horrible noise and pulsating feeling you experience are competly normal ABS operation. It's loud so that you know it's working. Just remember to keep firm pressure on the pedal and let the system stop your vehicle. No need to pump the brake pedal what so ever.

Just recently when I tried to stop at an intersection the ABS unexpectedly kicked in, it sounded like the front left wheel was falling off, and the KJ was not stopping. Thought the front left had collapsed. Once I stopped, I got out to check the damage....

just about fell on my butt, the entire street was covered with a thin layer of black ice.

Still getting used to ABS :D

That's good to know, I've pumped the break every time it's happened. I would've never guessed I've driven other vehicles that never did this. Maybe I just never got on the brakes hard enough...

Thanks for the help!

My state supplied Ford Taurus does the same thing, had to do a couple of panic stops on icy , snow covered roads and it feels like the whole front end is coming out from under it! I hate it, glad the KJ doesnt have it!!!!

LOL.

You should have heard the wife when I first had to utilize the ABS a few winters ago. She thought we were going to blow up.

I'm a real idiot. Never had a vehicle with ABS. Never experienced it before in my life. I drove 2 hours to go hiking, and before I got to the trailhead I wanted to play around in the snow. So anyway I pulled into a parking lot and tried going for a big slide and my Jeep made this horrible, grating, metal-scraping sound, and the vibration carried thru the foot pedals. Sounded and felt like someone scraping a shovel across a rough patch of cement.

I ended up driving all the way back home without ever going hiking because I was convinced my Jeep was broken and I wanted to get it fixed before the work week began. I called the dealer and explained the problem, and that's when I learned what ABS was. Idiot. 4 Hours of driving.

By the way I wish they would quit inventing stupid stuff like this. Just one more thing to break which doesn't even save lives according to the insurance statistics.

Nono ABS is an excellent technology. It allows you to turn better on slippery surfaces while braking (emergency reaction it to brake and turn when somethings about to go wrong). It's the air bags that kill people more than save them.

ABS actually increases the braking distance vs a non-ABS vehicle with a good driver----KEY WORD is good.ABS in my '96 Taruas almost broke my left knee cap, took the fuse out so no more ABS.And in my '01 Grand I kept going through a intersection(was 2" of ice) without ever slowing any, even though I slammed on the pedal(and kept it to the floor) about 100' from the intersection, and I was only doing 30mph,again I pulled the fuse and never had a problem stopping on ice again when I pumped my own brake pedal, not a stupid computer.

Very true tjkj.

My points were merely for all the average drivers (including myself) who would love a helping hand to tap the brake pedal when trouble arises.

Also very true about stopping power on snow and ice. ABS system on ice is worse than no ABS system. Only upside is that it might enable you to turn slightly better instead of blocking the wheels and going straight forward.

I just like the ABS system because it makes me feel safer. We have some turns in my town where we're going downhill fast and going around a bend into a roundabout. On one occasion I had the ABS system kick in without me knowing it was slippery, and I was able to steer down of the hill. I got a little happy that the system worked nicely.

Yep ABS was invented more for being able to still steer while hard braking on surfaces like ice,I overcome that little problem though by engaging 4wd and letting my TrueTrac pull me where I want to go on ice.God I love that TT on the ice, just point a shoot! I'm going to miss it when I do my SFA,going to a ARB in the front.

Honestly most times I would rather be without abs, but then there are plenty of other times when I would rather just have it on because it gets so slick I have a hard time telling when my wheels are locked and when they are not.

Like you I think I would pull the fuse, or rig up a switch that would let me turn it on/off.

I'm very happy to have ABS on my liberty. Kind of makes stopping idiot proof.
