I swapped the battery in my '02 this weekend and found a spring loaded disk at the center of the battery tray that appears to be connected to the wiring harness. Any idea what it might be for?

I found mine when installing a lift.

I believe it is a temp device just in case the battery gets hot.

On the Xj that is part of the cold weather package, I belive it to be a battery temp sensor.
(ninja edit)

^^^^^^ He is right,it's the battery temp sensor,it's part of the charging system to prevent overcharging.

That's cool to know, I've never seen that on any other vehicles. I don't often pull out batteries for the heck of it though...

cherokee xj has had them since 97. when battery is hot it signals the pcm to knock down the volts. when battery is cold it turns the volts up. mike

Thanks, I looked into the temp sensor some more. It appears to also signal the computer to switch some of the emissions sensors on and off in cold conditions (20F I believe). Not sure why. Ya learn something every day :)
