The KJ's been doing great until today after work. I'm driving home and stop at a stop sign and it stalls. I restart it, take off, stop at the next stop sign and it stalls again! It won't idle all of a sudden. It has a full tank of gas, oil is fine, anti-freeze is full, it's not over heating. Anyone got an idea why it's doing this? |

Did you fill up today, if so you might have water in your fuel. |

Normally I would say, “Oh, it’s normal, it’s just a CRD.” |

I filled it up a couple of days ago. It won't idle at all, if I take my foot off the gas it dies. I'll have to check the fuel filter in the morning, thanks. |

Can't really check the fuel filter without dropping the tank. Clogged fuel filter usually results in no power on acceleration in addition to stalling out. Is it fine once you get the rpms up? If so i'd rule out the fuel filter. Maybe bad cam or crank sensor? Check for codes before you start pulling your hair out. |

I'm not much of a mechanic, so I don't know how to check the codes. The check engine light is not on. It just dies when I take my foot off the gas and it gets to the point where it's supose to idle. It runs fine while driving, just won't idle. Sounds like I'll have to run it by my mechanic in the morning and see what he says about it. |

Are you tellin’ me that our Liberty’s do not have an easy accessible and replaceable fuel filter? |

Actually you can. You have to drill out the rivets for the two cargo tie-downs in the cargo floor nearest the swing gate, pull up the carpet and then remove the access cover in the bottom of the cargo area. There are four bolts holding the cover down, then you need a heat gun to soften the sealant around the perimeter of the cover. Pull that up and you've got a straight shot at the filter assembly. I did all this (minus replacing the filter) when I was trying to put some ferrite chokes on the power wires for the fuel pump to cut down the RFI I was getting on my HF radio. And you'll need some silicone sealant when you put the access cover back on, and some new rivets for the tie-downs. If you need some pics let me know - I still haven't replaced the rivets in mine so I could pull the carpet up and take some. |

I'd say it depends on how much fuel is in the tank |

| Post subject: | How Old is your battery |
A couple of months back I went out one evening and the Jeep didn't want to start and when it did it didn't want to run after a few minutes of keeping my foot on the gas i got it to idel only to drive about a block away and at every stop light it would die on me again. I finally got to a highway took it up to 60 MPH and set the cruise. drove for about an hour. The next day it started fine but rather then risk a rude surprise I replaced the battery and it appeared to be orinianl equipment. at least 5 years old. So instead of a fuel problem it could be electrical issues. Just a thought |

2x check the battery - with computers once the voltage gets low - everything goes weird - start and die is not unusual. (Gasser fuel filters should be good for close to 100K, batteries 3-4 years) |

I was reading all the above posts and was waiting to see if this would be posted. Our 02 did the SAME thing, would run but at idle would die. Check the battery. At driving speeds the gen/alt is helping power the PCM, at idle speeds the gen/alt dials down and can't power the engin and the PCM and depends on the battery. when it dies all hell breaks loose. Change the battery. Even if it isn't the issue, which i would bet it is, then you will need one VERY soon anyway. |

Don't forget, the fuel pump is electric as well. I've found that that is usually what starts slowing down first, causes stuttering, stalling as pressure drops. So even w/ a good alternator when your battery gives out , at idle you may not be running adequate fuel pressure. |

I haven't seen any mention of an idle air control, I'm not sure if the 3.7 has one or not, but they are a common problem when they get dirty. |

I took it down to my mechanic and he hooked it up to the computer. No codes were found and every thing checked out fine. So I'll get a new battery and see if that works. I bought the KJ used, so it could be the original battery. Hopefully that will fix the problem. Thanks for all the advice everyone! |

Is our fuel pump located in the fuel tank as well? |

IAC is not on the KJ...at the very least, I haven't seen or heard the IAC solenoid while poking around under my hood, and Mopar's IAC's are pretty noisy |
